Anyone is able to advise how we can choose \"good english books\" for our children to read when there are so many out there in the market/library. Especially so for those books with good contents and yet suffice pictures to engage the young readers.

personally i find it hard to gauge how good is the book cos different genre of books appeal to different readers' appetite and standard (eg while some people raved about Murderous Math, i have yet to get my boy to read beyond the first chapter maybe cos it is too advance/dry for him; eg while my boy loves Horrible Science, he does not like Horrible Geography as much etc). 'good books' are also subjective cos some parents are receptive to humor or comics while others prefer that their kids read classics.
that's why i find it very fruitful for parents to share in a forum like this so that parents who do not have the luxury of time to browse every shelves in the library can just zoom into the specific 'recommended books' and gauge if it suits their child.

PS: i think you should update your child's details (at least the birth year) so that parents can make better recommendation/advice based on your kids' age.

PS: i usually get very excited when i hit the nail by selecting the genre of books that my ds1 likes cos i can relying on other titles in the same series to tide over the next few weeks of reading sessions and then it is back to square one in search of engaging books again. :frustrated:

RE 39 Clues


any idea if must start from Book 1? can stop halfway or must go on-and-on...? are the cards essential in forming part of the reading experience?

Teehee, Jedamum, I wrote about this a few pages ago but got no response. I think Cafelatte may also have an idea. Hope she sees this.

Anyway, our experience is this: after the first book, the quality of the books went downhill. Rick Riordan, the author of the 1st, is the best according to my son. After that, some books were more of a struggle than others. He's stuck at bk6 and not clamouring for more. I got him the cards when he wanted - they provide clues. Think he stopped at card pack 2. There are already some cards in each book, so that might suffice.

jedamum, from what I recall, bk 1 really spurred him on to bk 2. Think the cliffhanger continues until the series is over (read that bk 10 is out but not sure if that's the end :)). He says The rest are not so well written. But he read on cos he wanted to find out what's next. The cards- I didn't look at it actually. My feeling is, not so necessary? There's some link w the computer but I don't let him on, so perhaps the cards tie into this. I'm outside but try the website http://www.39clues.com (I'm guessing!).

Hi kids_r_innocent, as jedamum says, how old are your kids so we can make recommendations?

If you're talking about picture books for very young children (I'm taking a stab in the dark), how about Richard Scarry books? I remember my son loved them all. They have very cute illustrations with a rather oddball sense of humour.
