i hv many times nearly got myself a rollie but held back cos i don't want to settle on 2nd best. not that rollie is 2nd best but somehow there isn't a model that really makes my heart beat faster. i believe if i am patient enuff, there will be a day when they will come out a design that will make me  at first sight.

in the meantime, i do hv titoni, not branded whatsoever but it is priceless to me cos it is belongs to my late father & i gauge the age to be 6 decades.

And that there are collectors who buy and keep these expensive time pieces. :!:
A friend's father collects watches. Partly as a hobby, partly as investments. According to him each time piece is in the 10s of thousands some in the hundreds of thousands. But he never wears them and periodically he will take them out to wind them or polish them then put them back in their boxes again. The ones that he wears are replicas of some of those he collects and they also cost at least a few thousand dollars each.

I just wonder, how much would you spend on a watch?
My daily wear watches are all below $5k. Dress watches range from the very cheap from pasar malam type to a couple of thousands. I dun mind splurging up to $10k on a decent watch but anything more then that.... think, think, think, and think but cannot bring myself to buy.

          MMM:
.... I am having thoughts if it is possible to buy a rollie overseas and then sell it here. There is some good margin there. But purchase price must be good.

I thought most of them are saying that price in Swiss may be more expensive. The saving if any is on duty and exchange rate when favourable.

Yes... my friend's hubby recently got his rolex from HK. Rolex service centre also told me that it's cheaper in HK.

My hubby and his sisters got their Tag from Switzerland when their sister went there for honeymoon!!!

But there are also alot of parallel importers now (just like car). These people buy from overseas and sell it here. It's cheaper than authorised dealer as they gain on GST and possibly exchange. You just need to get the watch authenticated.

so rolex is cheaper in HK and Tag is cheaper in Swiss?

I heard of some illegal practise modification to rolex like changing the dial to diamond type and selling at higher price.

hundreds of thousands :!: that's almost like wearing a small HDB flat on the wrist.

Can buy from other countries such as HK where it is cheaper. The watches are all the same and from Switzerland.

Yes, rolex is cheaper in HK. But not sure about Tag now. Tag price went up so much!!! My hubby bought me my current tag (around 15 yrs already) for around $600+. Now the same model (very slight design change only as my kids were going like mummy your watch) is going at $1950.

Actually those illegal modification are not \"acknowledge\" by Rolex Service Centre. Read in the forum that RSC will refuse to service that part, etc.... as it is non-original. So they are very particular and I feel that anything RSC don't acknowledge is like saying that it is not authentic. No one wants to buy a non-authentic rolex especially after paying so much.

We sent our watches for authentification at RSC as we bought the watch from a shop that brings in brand new from other countries. Yes and what a relief, we were given clearance. We think that shop can be trusted as it has been around for 30 years. But I don't want to wear the watch for 20 years to realise that some part is not authentic. Eg. if I passed on to my daughter then they found that they inherited a non-authentic from me :!: After giving us the verbal confirmation that everything is original, the recept was asking me why do I want to authenticate as my watch is brand new. I told her my source, my concerns, etc... she checked the best price they can offer for my model. I still bought it at 1k cheaper and my watch was sourced from Europe.

So if you are considering of buying a rollie (if 2nd hand), make sure there is agreement with seller to authenticate the watch. This is for peace of mind. Paying $75 for authentification is cheap compared to thousands you pay for the watch.

Agreed on the authenication for peace of mind. $75 is small price as compared to the price of the rolex.

Err.. they give a rolex leather case for keeping the watch after authentification. So ok lah
