Then shouldn’t it be "3. performs" since it’s one magician only?

          hi shirley,

As discussed in another English thread (PSLE English I think), the word ‘watched’ here is called ‘verb of perception’.

When you have verbs of perception in the first part of the sentence, the following verb (‘perform’ in your case) is called a ‘bare infinitive’ (without -s, -ed or -ing) eg. I saw him steal; They heard her sing.

Such verbs (of perception) include:feel, hear, listen to, notice, observe, perceive, see, sense, watch.

If you realise, these verbs have to do with ‘perception’ - how you perceive.

          Hope this helps.

                Hi starlight1968sg,

Thanks for your quick reply. I also thought it is option 2, but answer key is 1, and I wasn't very sure.

                        Hi elkinwt,

The answer for this question is (1).

In this question, we are focusing on 'chances'.
'Chances' here is singular and not plural.
We are not talking about actual chances-
as in I give you one chance...I give you another chance again.

Here in this sentence, the 'chances' means the possibility. 'Possibility' is singular, it is uncountable. In the same way, 'chances' as used in the above sentence is uncountable, it is singular.

                        Thus the answer is (1).

                        TAS
