        hi

        My DC’s scores dropped from SA1. In particularly, a drop of more than 5 marks for Maths. When we look thru the mistakes, its mostly careless mistakes and questions DC cant "see" the solution. We try to be supportive and encouraging with DC as DC has put in effort and was already feeling down. How to help "careless" kids ?

          Do we need an average of 60s to enter express stream?

          Sc = 70
          Math = 55
          Chinese = 40
          English = 67

          likely normal stream?

          thx you

            Previously I am very fierce to students, would give them a good earful if they were careless, they don't dare to make careless mistakes, sharp improvement. Unfortunately intimidation works. Like old days how our parents used to spank us when we're naughty and we dare not repeat. But new era, I doubt parents/teachers are willing or should to do that.

            Now with more experience and knowledge, above method only works for those who have the below in order. If a child intrinsically has issues, scolding won't improve the situation.

            1st: Is health in order? Is child sick n thin? No energy/ electricity flowing into brain? Good eye sight?
            2nd: Focus in order? If not, keep trying diff methods: ginseng, sugar boost, vitamin B, chinese tonics, chicken essence.
            3rd: Emotionally in order? Nervous, unsettled, can't focus.
            4th Habits in order? No handphone addiction to corrode cognitive development. Mobile impact is very obvious to me. Need to stop mobile devices, let kids play games, do housework/craft, activate brain functions.
            5th Attitude problem? Need disciplinary action: hands on supervision, Rewards & Consequences.
            6th Techniques to follow to prevent carelessness, I.E highlighting, elimination, tag Qn No. to comprehension passage. Develop correct working routine.

              4 Bs would be borderline 200. 4 HIGH Bs scrape into express ~205.
              Current results 2B, 1C, 1D apparently normal.

                It would appear that your child may be on the high end of Normal stream. Need to buck up a bit on Chinese to get to Express. Remember that Primary school is not the end of world for slower kids who need time to grow.

                    He's results rather unpredictable. We hope this child enters a school that meets his needs.

                      To hit Express stream, average per subject, Raw score, is close to 70 marks. If Total for 4 subjects can reach around (70 x 4) say, equal around (280 upon 400), can cross the barrier of 200, enter Express stream ( Sec 1).

                      However, there are some Secondary schools, that even though in the region of 18x or 19x, below 200, they still allow student to do Express (Sec 1).

                      If u already have some Secondary target schools in mind, can refer to that booklet given by primary schools to all P6 students, roughly the range or Cut-off-point, in those schools that offer Express stream, which u are interested in.

                      Based on the score you provided, the child Total is 232 (upon 400). Child is pulled down heavily, by his Chinese and Maths.

                      Go through all his (P4 to current up-to-date latest P5 SA2) Chinese and Maths past CA1, CA2, SA1 and SA2 papers. Should be able identify

                      for Chinese :

                      is it his Oral or his zuowen or from Chinese Paper 2, which are his weakest components , that are dragging him down ?

                      Have a word with his school's lao shi, how to help him improve, within this very short remaining time period left, from November 2018 to the next 2019 P6 CA1 (February), if not P6 SA1 (May), at least from his current 40 marks, how to clear passing mark to beyond 50 ? Discuss with his school Chinese laoshi, strategies to help him improve. Every 5-marks interval that he made, counts a lot and is a good improvement. We celebrate his little small-step improvement made. We focus more on his \"journey\" of progress, not focus on the end-point (final result). If he is making little small-byte step improvement in his journey, he will reach his end point (his targeted goal) eventually.

                      Example

                      Suppose he is weak with Chinese Paper 2, where weak component identified is, Open-ended \"li jie wen da\" section. Perhaps, propose to his school's lao shi : is it possible that he do say, either one or 2 open-ended \"li jie wen da\" per week, then submit to laoshi to mark ? In other words, don't do the entire Chinese paper 2 and ask Lao-shi to mark. What we can do is, strip right-down to his weakest component, enlist the help of lao shi, to help him mark in that very weak component (area).

                      Some Chinese Teachers are helpful, particularly if the form Tr happen to be your class Chinese laoshi, or those Tr that are kind, with a heart, willing to help. This way, can receive immediate help. No point continue to attend Chinese tuition centre group tuition, because now this pupil need \"Individual\" attention. Group tuition doesn't help anymore, esp. when tuition class is too big, with 8 to 12 kids. Tr is unable to focus on him individually, in a big Tuition group setting.

                      With very little time left, the key word is consistency ... that means, what is he doing every day, to help himself improve in his Chinese ?

                      If his daily timetable (from now, until 2019 February P6 CA1) consistently is able to incorporate small parts of his weakest components and work upon them unceasingly with peseverance, determination, working hard at every single of his Weak components identified , be it broken down into every 45-minutes per session, with a 20-to-30 minutes short break interval in-between to rest, then he is on his way, to improvement, to overcome and jump over (cross) his hurdle, from current 40 marks to beyond 50 passing mark. For this to take place, need both side-by-side parents' support commitment, as well as a good guardian Teacher (can be school Tr, or a private Tutor hired) to guide him, closely monitor and assist him. Bottom line is hard work and effort chipped in, to bring him over to the other side.

                      To hit 230 :
                      if Raw score, per each 4 subject can reach 80, Total around 320 (80 x 4) upon 400, possible.

                      To hit 245 :
                      if Raw score, per each 4 subject can reach 85, Total around 340 (85 x 4) upon 400, possible.
