DH was in Shanghai this week and just visited an exhibition.

He saw a group of NYGH girls on a study tour there and observed that the girls spoke English among themselves. None of the girls seemed interested in the visit, they said it’s boring. Hmmm… can only infer that Singapore’s interest in Chinese culture is still at a relatively low level.

However, the girls were very enthusiastic when they reached the gift shops. Everything also buy, souvenirs and the various tidbits. Shopping is in our genes

I've learnt both languages in uni. Find Jap easier maybe coz I've interest in it's culture but Korean language tougher maybe in those days Kpop not born yet & no Korean drama to glue me to its culture. :rotflmao:

I learnt Japanese at that time when J serials were very hot. Easy to pick up spoken and grammar sentence structures from watching the J serials. Although the tested compo writing was tough to pick up because Japanese has varying degrees of formal language structure. The hiragana also hard to remember for beginners, must memorize.

My friends who went for Korean lessons during their adult years, told me that Korean words/characters are actually a modern invention and very logically planned with all the lines and circles combinations denoting certain sounds? Therefore easier to pick up? And with all the K-dramas readily available, the spoken part is definitely easy to pickup, at least the common phrases are all well known to any average Singaporean. Sarang-aeyo and kamsa-hamnida everybody knows at least!

The Korean written words were all designed by the 1st Korean emperor, whom the ppl were proud of for his wisdom.

Our lecturer shared that the emperor also designed the 韩服 as he loves watching the dancers after holding court with his subjects & the other thing he designed was the place he holds court can be turned into a private room when he fancy any lady & all the sides will drop its adjustable walls to give them privacy & every subj will move off away when the 'walls' drop. Oh one more detail, the shrubs and small water grooves surrounding the court's perimeter is to give further privacy for the emperor's private enjoyment, we were told.

I visited Korea's palace in the year of The Winter Sonata but it was opened (walls not dropped) and barricade around it.

There are chinese characters in jap words and at times, can figure the meaning

There seems none in Korean words.
The names of Koreans, however, are written in Chinese characters.
