Affiliated Schools and their COPs

Wendy LOH:
Hi, can i check if Nan Chiau Primary School and Nan Chiau High School is not affiliated? why?
They are not affiliated. Because MOE and Straits Times said so lor.
Maybe you should pose the question to SHHK why *none* of their primary schools have affiliation to secondary. Maybe they missed the boat to fight for this right.

Hi,
Holy Innocent High admin told me is MOE who decide how many affiliated students they can take in and not the school. Then said that they take in 50% affiliated students. Not sure how true is this as is not what I had read from websites. Can someone enlighten me. -

The admin is half correct / half wrong.Hi,

From 2019, 20% (that's the half wrong) of places in affiliated secondary schools will be set aside for non-affiliated pupils. This is a policy determined by MOE (so that's half correct).
I doubt Holy Innocent High would need the 20% cap as unlikely that all the primary pupils (that meet the COP) would proceed to the secondary school. Some would consider other schools, especially students who did well. -
But is it really MOE that decide how many affiliated students they take in for the past few years? I thought is the school who make that decision.

Prior to the 2019 intake, schools decide. Hence, there is a particular school without any non-affiliated students.
From 2019, while schools can decide the COP for affiliated primary schools, they must set aside 20% of their places for non-affiliated students.
TBH, I wouldn't trust an admin staff for knowing everything, especially policy matters. -
Floppy,
Thks for answering my queries. Thats what i thought so too. This question is not regarding affiliation but like to have someone views on it. This year there are 3 additional primary schools in Sengkang with their first batch of PSLE students. Do you think this is going to affect the intake of Punggol, Sengkang and Hougang Secondary Schools?
I am worried that my girl may not get a place in Holy Innocent High due to the affiliation and the above scenario. -

Will be very honest here. Holy Innocent High is not a particularly popular secondary school as evident by previous COP: Holy Innocents’ High School (co-ed) – 228.Floppy,

Even with the increase no. of P6 applicants from PG, SK ad HG, I doubt majority of them would be choosing HIHS as their top choices. With HIHS no where near the 20% cap, I don't think affiliated students would play a big part in altering the COP in a significant way. That said, changes in COP by + - 2 is still consider normal and should form part of your consideration. -
Ok thkq.

Hi Floppy, just out of curiosity, able to share which school had no non-affiliated students? Just KPO, if cannot disclose it's ok.

There were several such schools. It’s not big secret. Mainly the Catholic and Christian schools.
Anyway this year everything will change.
