Thanks 'thisis2012', the Blog data is interesting, and 'floppy's math correlation curve looks incredible. šŸ˜†
Err... the curve is based on the data (and have to thank Bill for excel as well šŸ˜‚ ).

      Two other curves to share:

By regression, with ESIS at 260, RGS and NYGH COP is estimated to be 260 (no change) and 262 or 263 (slight drop) respectively.

Thanks much hquek.. Gotta apply leave liaoo..

Anybody has kids that need to travel 1.5 hours? My DD put SNGS as 1st choice, now am so worried how is she going to survive the commute time 3 hours per day 😢
Hopefully they have school bus from my area.

But again she may or may not get in also..

You may want to check cos I went for open house and one friend i met told me she is thinking of the school as its the rare few that has school bus. I am not sure really but do call to check as it may be due to primary school kids in the same premises.

Yah, they have school bus. Just not sure whether it has the route to my place. šŸ™‚

Much thanks to @floppy for crunching the numbers. :salute:

The final analysis pretty much matches my unscientific gut feel guesstimate. šŸ˜‚

Per 2017 stats, the SAP school that has the lowest COP is MSHS which is an all boys school, so does it mean girls within the cohort's top 30% who want to take HCL can only pick AHS or CCHSM whose COPs are 238?

Can one go to another SAP sec to take his/her HCL lessons? How does this HCL 30% thingy work?

the 30% thingy is a new one day old info to me šŸ˜“ more qns ..if kid flung hcl in PSLE, will it affect the chances of kid to choose hcl in sec1 say compared to a kid same points but no attempt for hcl in PSLE assuming both within the 30%?

only SAP secondary schools will offer hcl ie if not in SAP school cant take hcl?

OK, I dug out this list of non-SAP sec schools which look to me can open a Chinese Special Prog class for CL-proficient kids within the school, if there are at least 15 pupils?

            https://www.moe.gov.sg/docs/default-source/document/education/admissions/secondary-one-posting/files/schools-offering-hmtl.pdf

An old media release on this Special Programme dated 2002 underscores the criteria:

            http://www.nas.gov.sg/archivesonline/speeches/view-html?filename=2002033013.htm

The Chinese (Special Programme) is offered to students:
            i) in the top 10% of a PSLE cohort, or
ii) in the top 11 to 30% of a PSLE cohort with A* in their Mother Tongue Language (MTL) or Distinction in their Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL) and at least A in their English Language (EL) at the PSLE.
            ...
The Chinese (Special Programme) will be conducted in schools if there are at least 15 students. Students in schools that do not offer the subject will attend classes in other secondary schools within their cluster or in a nearby cluster.

            https://www.moe.gov.sg/docs/default-source/document/education/syllabuses/mother-tongue-languages/files/chinese-special-programme-secondary-2015.pdf

The strange thing is this Chinese Special Prog doesn't culminate in HCL O level exams in Sec 4. It's still CL O level, meaning students won't enjoy the 2 bonus point deduction from L1R5. 🤷[/quote]I believe the Chinese (Special Programme) is similar to the MSP (Malay Special Programme) which is a meant to be a third language for students. There is a 2 pts bonus if they do pass the subject at 'O' level when applying to JC/MI.

Your graphs are lovely, floppy šŸ˜„ But what about the change last year in DSA policy - fewer DSA places allowed translating into more places available in the top top schools? Would that not be a confounding variable (that would explain why COP dropped in RI, RGS and HCI?) And before someone mentions NYGH and MGS, MGS takes in very few (2-3 classes I think) into their IP programme, and NYGH's affiliation programme also reduces the number of places available via S1.

That's why I say, forget about ESIS. It's not a very useful estimation of COP :rotflmao:

There are too many individual / unique variables (affiliation, DSA, etc) at play that does not provide a useful analysis unless:
                      1. schools (or MOE) have been transparent with their data; and
                      2. the sample size is bigger.
With more variables, we can even start working on a pivot table and see how 1 change affects the outcome

In addition, I should also state that RGS and NYGH estimated COP is 260 +- 1.3 and 262.5 +- 0.7 respectively, based on a 95% confidence interval. The numbers aren't exactly useful since most of us are saying COP can be +- 2 points, which is > 98% CI already šŸ˜‚

Not that I don't want to do, but I like said, for fun, ok lah. The whole thing was meant as an 'experiment' to show (as well as convince myself) that using ESIS as an estimation for COP is not very useful or helpful (not that we didn't know about that šŸ˜† )

Now, just relax, and wait for posting results ok šŸ˜‰
