I saw a number of posts in this thread that discussed revising throughout the Dec holidays and worry about how there is a lot to do and insufficient time.

Having gone through the whole process with my child this year, I understand that parents are anxious, especially if the results for the school exams have not been stellar. I would still urge you to consider having some real breaks to pace your children. It is a fast but still very long journey to October 2019.

You’ll need to help to pace your kids, when to peak, when to take short breaks, when to go intensive. After all, everything that is suggested here is for the academic success of the children. Don’t neglect the well-being and mental/ physical health just for the sake of those 3 magic numbers.

My child just finished PSLE this year. I remember during her Nov/Dec last year, all we did was get her to spend time revising her weaker or not so confident P5 subjects or topics. By revising, I mean doing some P5 assessments for those topics. We never believed in studying ahead. So we didn't touch P6 topics at all during her P5 Dec school holidays. She spent about 3 days a week, 1 hour each day to do her revisions. We wanted to do this for 3 reasons. Firstly, to make sure that her P5 foundation is strong. That will help her cope with P6 because many of the P6 work are built on P5. Secondly, we wanted to keep her \"engine\" warm but not running near the max. While some may think that there's not much time left, it is actually a very long race. If you are not careful, they peak too early, they will burn out and loses the drive to excel. So pace it out. Make sure they have their fair share of fun. Lastly, we did not ask her to start studying P6 work during P5.Dec holidays because we are aware that some students who did that tend to \"switch-off\" when the teacher starts teaching those topics in P6 because the students will think they already know the topics so don't need to pay attention.

That's my personal method and experience. It doesn't guarantee that it will work for every child. But at least my child has enjoyed her learning journey thus far though sh will still complain stressful once in a while 😉

I have actually advised parents of my learners to start training their children to work on a regular timetable, since July Primary 5.

Thanks so much for sharing. I truly appreciate your thought process, balance is the key and building momentum is more crucial than being ahead of race at this point. Hope you kiddo did well and will be going to school of choice.

And thanks. My child did well for her PSLE, enough to give her options to choose the school that she feels most comfortable to study in for the next few years. At the start of the PSLE journey, we did not set goals like how many points to score or which school to go to or how many As/A* to get. Neither did we talk about rewards. We just helped her to understand that if she put in effort and does well, at least that will open up more options for her. And whatever the points lead her to in the end, so be it. Now she is enjoying the fruits of her labour. Which is play and play and play everyday. :rotflmao:

I hope your kiddo will do well too in next year's PSLE. But more importantly to enjoy learning, stay curious and stay healthy. This is the best chance to create a strong bond between parent and child. All the best!

Just to add on ski’s excellent advice…

My kid also just finished psle this year. Take note the critical period is between prelims & psle. Those few weeks seem very near yet very far. For some schools which have their prelims early, this period can be more than 1 month between the 2 exams. Many kids either get too stressed up or switch off too much, especially if they already have places via DSA. So help them balance & pace it out.

It’s going to be a busy year - with competitions (if any), CA1, SA1, DSA trials, auditions & interviews, prelims then the big one - all in the space of 10 months. All the best!

Thanks Zappy for pointing out the importance between Prelim and PSLE. Those with good prelim results should continue to keep up the momentum and not think that they already know it all and can starting relaxing. Those with not so ideal prelim results, no need to panic. Focus on the areas that your child are not so good at and keep practising. The school will usually give alot of exams mock questions after prelim. Just make sure your child complete it. But still, remember to give them time for play.

For parents who want to enrol their children in international school do think twice. Not sure about other international schools but my best friend’s daughter was enrolled last year with HCIS (sec 1/year 1) and was totally disappointed with the system. The attractive scheme they have is to let the students have a through train to IB but think carefully what if the child did not do well in IB? What other certificate do they have? They don’t offer IGCSE anymore but why? Do you know majority of the students are foreigners and the standard will be compromised if all the Singaporean and foreign students mixed together in a class? My friend’s daughter (local) who came from a good primary school scored well at first in the 1st half of the year. However, her study attitude seemed to lack off when she saw how other classmates seemed to be so ‘relax’ in their studies. Her standard had dropped too. No longer was she that conscious in her studies and the whole moral of studying seeming to be going down hill. Finally, my friend decided to withdraw her daughter after a year and now she is happily and diligently studying in a local secondary school. The only regret my friend has is to have wasted a year letting her daughter to even pick up some vice habits and in turn need to help her daughter to ‘unlearn’ them. Luckily, now her daughter is picking up in her overall standard of studies again and most importantly having a good learning environment is vital to a growing child especially in the adolescent years. So hope the parents will really find out more about the international schools before making any decision of enrolling their children.

There are international schools, and there are international schools.

                      Same same but different.

                        Hi there!

Will anyone be interested in forming a group tuition for P6 Science with my son at the tutor’s place along Tampines Street 86? I have requested the class to focus on open ended questions.

Tutor is charging $180/4 weeks (1.5 hr each week)

The class is scheduled to be on Fridays at 5pm- 6.30pm.

PM me if you need more details.
