Not sure if this is the right forum to ask but anyone know on the difference in culture between NGHS and RGS? I assume some parents here have gone through some thought process before ending here but what made you choose NGHS vs RGS ? Is distance also a factor? One parent told me not to let distance hinder your child if it is a really good school like NGHS or RGS. Any parents can give some advice ? Greatly appreciate as dd likes both school.

My DD also liked both sch, we did the comparison between the two and both were equally good in terms of their offerings.
Culture wise one might say there is a difference but I think its minor, distance wise depends where you stay but both are accessible by public transport.
The main decider for my DD was where were her classmates going , since everything is similar.

There is a https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=12662 devoted to the comparison between these 2 schools.

And culture wise, there is a difference but no, it is not minor. They are as different as chalk and cheese.

LeeTaiTai, I suppose our girls are from the same primary school. πŸ˜„

From a non-SAP primary, inevitably, girl would want to follow her buddy to RGS, which I can fully understand. But at the same time, my husband and I notice our daughter has the potential to do well in Chinese too. And indeed, she did very well in her CL and HCL in the PSLE, which she herself is very pleased. Hubby is happy to see girl stepping out of her comfort zone.

Though my girl has not started school yet, I have the impression that NYGH girls belong to the ζ–―ζ–‡γ€ζ–‡ι›…εž‹. Maybe more senior parents here can advise you on the school culture part. At the same time, you may wish to bring your daughter to attend the open house of both schools to understand the schools better.

Since selection of schools for 2018 is over, I presume you are considering for 2019 and beyond.
I would advise your girl to attend the open house for both schools to have a feel of the environment and a feel of how the school students react to visitors during Q&A while they lead the school tour.
Other factors to consider when selecting the school:-
            1) School starts time and travelling time (NYGH starts at 8.15am, so for some parents/students, this is a plus point)
            2) CCA, does the school has the CCA your girl is interested in, is the school strong in that particular CCA, what are the opportunities your girl has if she joins that CCA in that school. How does the school select the students for their CCA? For example, thru audition (ie dance, choir) or trials (sports). For example, if your girl is not very strong in sports but still wish to join, will the school provide such opportunity.
            3) If the student is weak in coping in her study, either due to increased number of subjects or CCA commitment, how does the school support them.
            4) Uniform - some girls do not like sleeveless top and some do not like pinafore style
            5) Special program/Scholarship by MOE, if your girl is keen to be challenged, you can apply for some MOE program/scholarship (check MOE website)-
RGS offers RSP (Regional Studies Program) - interested? Ask the Raffles girls during the open house visit
NYGH offers BSP (Bicultural Studies Programme) and AEP (Art Elective Program) interested. Ask NY girls during the open house visit
            6) Boarding School experience, NYGH Sec 2s students have BSE - Boarding School Experience
            7) Leadership oppprtunities, for girls who are keen in becoming a leader in the school, can check with the school students what are the available opportunities
😎 School overseas exchange program, what choices each school offers
            9) What’s the criteria to promote to their affiliated JCs (RJC/HCI). RGS uses GPA system (best score is 4) while NYGH uses MSG system (best score is 1)
            10) Racial diversity - RGS is more racially diverse, NYGH is predominately Chinese
            11) Currently NYGH has one structured IP class - girls take β€˜O’ levels to obtain a β€˜O’ level cert, proceeding to HCI will depend on their β€˜O’ level results
(need to check during open house if this will continue in the future),

Both schools offer school based program which is difficult to compare, best to check with the respective schools during open house and clarify whatever doubts you have. Both schools have their strengths. Even though many people may have perceived NYGH as a β€˜Chinese school’, base on my observation, many students communicate in English in their daily conversation.

I realized that the promotion criteria is different. Especially for whether a student needs to take CL at year 5. For NYGH, if score more than B4 in HCL then will need to take CL at HCI (JC1) but no need in RGS unless score less than C6. Maybe this is due to NYGH being a SAP school?
This is true during my dd's time.

To add to the above, NYGH students use iPad in their learning journey.

NYGH students use iPad from Sec 2 onwards. RGS students use macbook from Sec 1 onwards.

                      Floppy..my household too !

Thank you all for such valuable inputs. I am really grateful. I didnt consider that much beyond the fact it is SAP school and presume more chinese and culturally it will be more skewed in their learning in that aspect. I didnt know that they take O level exam in IP track too.. i always thought it is just internal exam except chinese and you need to achieve B4.

Really appreciate the guidance and I will use these pointers to find out more for dd. Yes the sleeveless uniform is a concern for her and we went to the open house last year ..some girls skirt were black !..she didnt go for thr RGS one last year due to her camp .. hope we can make it this year and timing is good :thankyou:
