I saw a deer headbutt a toddler in the face when he started screaming at Nara deer park. Better get your toddler or child to behave when you bring them there

                Hi,

Will be visiting Japan mid April 2019. Flying in and out of Nagoya. We have 11 days and intend to cover Takayama, Shirakawago, Kanazawa, Toyama, Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, Matsumoto, Gifu and Nagoya.

I did some research and found that the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass does not cover the Kurobe Alpine Route while the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass does not cover Kanazawa. I need some advice on how I should plan my itinerary / route to cover all the places that I would like to visit in the most economical way.

Does it make sense to buy both passes since I will have 11 days (5 to cover the Kanazawa & Shirakawago area and 5 to cover the Kurobe-Alpine Route and Matsumoto area)? I checked the individual train fares for each sector but still couldn’t work out a suitable itinerary.

Appreciate some advice and comments from all who have done Central Japan. I am open to suggestions.

                Thank you in advance 🙂

4 prefectures in total. Haha. No choice but to buy both passes as it's most economical. If you add up the individual fares plus seat fees, you'll discover it definitely costs more than getting the pass. But I think the pass doesn't cover the local bus rides to Shirakawa-go. Please check.

You should go 'Counter-clockwise' from Nagoya (1 nite) > Activate Apline Pass on Day 1 to Matsumoto (1 nite)/Kiso Valley (if you like) > Shinano-Omachi (1 nite) > Alpine Hike (cover all stations in 1 day) > Toyama (1 nite) > Activate Takayama-Hokuriku Pass at Toyama station > Kanazawa (1 nite) > Shirakawago/Gokayama (1 nite at gassho-zukuri or other ryokans) > Takayama (1 nite) > Gifu (half day) > Nagoya

Alternatively, just get the Alpine Pass (cos you need the pass to go thru the stations). Then buy your local train tickets from Toyama station to Kanazawa (less than 1,000 yen only). Base yourselves at Kanazawa for 2 nites and take Nouhi buses to Shirakawago/Gokayama etc for day trips will do. IMPT: need to make bus reservations.

In fact, if you are in a hurry, you can simply join a ROUND day tour from Kanazawa to Shirakawago (Morning) + Takayama (Afternoon). Some tours also cover Gokayama. There are many day tours departing from Kanazawa to these 2 cities. I'm recommending day tours to Shirakawago and Takayama because you'll going there in April, so no snow to see anyway and the 3 gassho houses can be covered within 1 hr. However, round tours cost a lot more than your F&E hops. Good thing is you don't need to change buses after the train ride and walk a long way in.

After the village tours, you take a 3-hour direct Shinkansen from Kanazawa straight to Nagoya. I feel Gifu city can be sacrificed or you can make a short local train ride from Nagoya to look-see, after you've checked into your Nagoya hotel.

15 Apr Alpine opens, but I think there’s still some post-Hanami crowds plus pre-Coronation / Enthronement of Naruhito (27 Apr -6 May) crowds in Japan. You need to secure your hotels soon.
