Asus Eee PC
-
I see this cute like laptop (UMPC) from Asus (Asus Eee PC) at Sitex 2007. It is a cute like laptop, I am salivating over it. Cost less than $600. But running Linux.
Thinking if this is a good gadget to get for kids. Any comments? -
What can be run on it? Since Linux, got software or not?

I don’t think it’s really that great leh… I’ve not actually seen or touched it, but I’ve the Kohjinsha which I feel is way about the Asus EEE’s class, and the original Kohjinsha is now selling at about the same price as the Asus EEE anyway. The K has got a rotatable touchscreen, VGA port, bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g, media slots, USB, and most importantly, a hdd with proper WinXP running on it. I can’t imagine having to lug along an external hdd just to run winxp on the Asus…

I think the exciting part of it is than there is no UMPC that sells at such a low price before. Hope more such devise at low price point will appear.

  I think that's a drastic and sweeping statement to make. I am sure glad MOE doesnt think like you. Sorry that I dun agree with you. -

I chat with my kids using video conferencing via MSN when I am posted for overseas assignment. It saves phone bills & my kids got to talk & see their mother everyday.
Students as young as P1 in Singapore are asked to submit homework & learn their lesson through computers at home. If we don't familiarise the kids with the current technology, our kids will be left behind. -
no worries...

Hi to all,
Incidentally, we bought one Asus abt 6 months back (upgraded the ram and is still below $450. (The price for K was higher than). All my kids are equip with a notebook (require by sch) and the last kid wanted one badly. His dad also wanted one just for surfing and email stuff.
We do not mind not having XP since the other PC are equip with it. The linux loaded was configure to be very user-friendly and there is simply no learning curve. Just plug and play. It even came with open-office and we can do spreadsheet and stuff. Connecting to the wireless is a breeze. When he is at home, we hooked it to the large monitor (else his eyes will suffer). When out, dad uses it while waiting to pick me up. Speed -- no complain for surfing and email. Even managed to login to my office email account via web-based. Till now, my kid has no complain except when he wants to play games that is requires windows os. (too bad, less one game). -
BTW, I have a HP 2133 which was given by Starhub under contract. It’s running Vista Home with upgraded 2G memory. It’s hardly used at home because the screen is too small for me. Still under warranty and I am willing to let go if someone gives a good offer.
Anyone interested?
