Thanks ksp:
DS is in Year 6 this year. On the day the article was published, his friend put it in Instagram. Some friends commented. Most of the comments are \"The results are not uncommon in RI. It was only Year 5 results. Still have time to catch up. Why gave up?\" DS thinks that maybe because in Year 1-4 the boy had As (I guess it is about GPA 3.6?) for all his subjects so he was surprised when he got C, D and E for his overall Year 5 results.https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/education/i-flunked-the-ip?xtor=CS3-18&utm_source=STiPhone&utm_medium=share&utm_term=2018-12-30+9%3A12%3A32&fbclid=IwAR3FzYKLraF9qEPzEsONBIXbUk2BUkpZkOJ2peDd9Ma00tlXwFP8XF2w5Uo
Why Straits Times want to have this article before the new year begin?
In my opinion, I think the results can be improved. There is still time. The boy looks like can afford tuition since he was able to go to Australia to continue his studies. However, maybe it is hard to find tutor/tuition centre for Knowledge & Inquiry because even RI only has very few students taking that subject (maybe 1 class only? And there are about 50 classes in each cohort in RJC). The boy also took H2 Literature. I am not sure whether it is easy to find tuition on H2 Literature. Maybe the boy thought it is hard to improve in these 2 subjects? I am not sure. I can only guess.
Anyway, RI is a very compassionate school. Don't worry so much especially in Year 1-4. Those are the most enjoyable years

Agreed. I came to the realisation recently that the IP promotion criteria for RI/RGS are relatively lenient. In doing so, the schools try to get as many students to graduate from RI(JC) as possible, even though setting a higher promotion bar will ensure that its A level results will be even more stellar by transitioning out the weaker students.

So kudos to the schools. -
How did the JRIC go this evening?
Did the boys do the United cheer (fav of many parents)?

Yes! I thought that the prefectorial board and PSLs did a great job in putting the programme together.

So for the upcoming Kiwi Cup, which school are you going to support? Son's school or alma mater?

Surprised to read that the GPA calculation has been revised for Y3, and will be revised for Y4 from 2020 onwards.
Instead of (core 5 subjects + 3)/8, itβs now (core 5 subjects + 1)/6. Since most of the boys take 9 subjects, they can have 3 subjects as βbufferβ excluding EL and HMT/MT. This makes it even easier to qualify for IP promotion.
With lesser subjects, itβll also be beneficial for those taking RA since that is known to be tough. -

RGS also just shared the new GPA calculation based on 6 subjects - EL, HMT/MT, 1 Math, 1 Science, 1 Hum, and 1 best subject. For lower secondary, most take 7 subjects and some take 8 that count towards GPA. So everyone would have at least 1-2 βbufferβ subjects. I would agree that it definitely reduces stress on the students. Glad that both R schools are harmonizing in this aspect.Surprised to read that the GPA calculation has been revised for Y3, and will be revised for Y4 from 2020 onwards.

Most likely the men in blue.

Do you know whether non-A* boys can sit for either Euler or Galileo programme selection test? TIA.
