Mentally, u’ll hv one full year w/o interruptions for u to put in place study plans & time mgt plans, etc. Relieved for you dear. -

Lol. No exams = breather for PARENTS? :siam:Daughter's new principal has decided to do away with mid year exam for Sec 3 :rahrah:
This is TRULY wonderful because it has been nothing but tests and exams since Sec 1.
I can take a breather and teach her to plan timetable to revise.
Such is the sad reality for today's Singaporean parents. I applaud the courage of the Principal, but I'll believe it if I can overlook the \"pop quizes\" that seem to swamp students these days. -

But students don't have to prepare a lot of pop quizzes, I think? I like them because it encourages kids (mine, at least) to pay attention in class and try to learn the stuff first time round, and also try to learn the material through homework. They know they don't have much time to go over it again and again before the quiz. Reduces time spent and stress overall. -

there will be mini tests in place of mid year exams 10% term 1, 15% for term 2 and 3. end of year exam 60%.

mini tests are definitely easier to handle than a chunk of topics to revise for. i'm all for it...maybe because my daughter is in sec 3. what is required for HER to do from now to week 5 is weekly revision.
the first tests will take place in week 6, right after CNY week.
this week is called term 1 week 0. -
I think exams honestly has lost its meaning. Exams and tests are supposed to be a way to take stock of ones learning and allow one to discover their weak points. Exams have only fed stress to students, and i feel that doing away with mid year exam is a good start to reduce the stress and workload of a student. After all, it is not important to score, but rather, to learn.

all their lives, students only know exams. doing away with mid year will help lessen a lot of stress.
when kids start school, they face the first CA (aka assessment, progressive report and other 'fanciful' names) soon after CNY.
there is no chance to enjoy the 2 days of CNY with CA at the back of their heads.
come april, it's time to plan for mid year exam. CA1 in feb/march, mid year in may, CA2 in sep and SA2 in oct...exams really feed a lot of stress to our kids and we parents. -
is really crazy to have so many exam per Term (CA1, SA1, CA2, SA2), whole year round.
Frankly, CA2 being so close to SA2, is totally irrelevant.
CA1 is only relevant in P5 as a wake-up-call. P6 can also do away with CA1. The rest of the years : no need CA1 -
Nobody likes exams and of course we rejoice when some gets trashed. But if you take a step back and look at each test from CA1 to SA2, besides the fanciful names, each test is to determine if the learning has been fruitful for the last period of study. That is something that is needed not only by the students, but also the teachers. We need to know if the teaching and learning has been effective. That is the underlying goals of a test. If something else can replace tests effectively, I’d be the first to put up my hand!
