Is he stress? I mean more than usual, Is there a pattern like more frequent and worse nearing exam or tests period?

My 10 yr old nephew suffers from tension headaches, which will worsen during SA, CA period. During the recent exam he was also hving sleep problems. Doctors said he has mild anxieties attacks. When it is really bad, he would hv sweaty palms and excessive prespirations, need to go toilet very often and sometimes even diarrhoea.

My suggestion would be to write down all you can remember about his symptoms, frequencies, durations, etc. So that when you consult doctors, whether Western or TCM, it would help in getting a better chance of a proper disgnosis. In my experience, doctors don’t know everything, their disgnosis is very much based on what info we can give them and also their abilities to ask the right questions to get the most precise picture of whats happening with the patient.

Another thing is that your son is 11 yr old, so you may want to ask him about seeing a doctor for his conditions. He may hv other problems or things that he is hiding from you and may not want to worry you. In my opinion it is important to get his views about the situation. If he denies any problem, which is a indication of problems (he could also be afraid of his conditions), then you need some finesse in getting him to consult a doctor. When my nephew was hving headaches, initially his parents thought he was just finding excuses to escape homework/housework, etc. When the anxieties symtoms start showing, he tried to hide them. When his dad finally get him to open up and talk, he said that he is scared that he could be very ill with cancer or brain tumor and such. His revelation of his fears was the turning point of my sis and brother-in-law relationship with their son. They no longer doubt his actions and start to hv a better level of understanding and communication with their 10 yo.

Sorry for being so long winded, hope this can be of some help…

        Hi MLR,

Thanks for your explanation. It could be partly due to stress, but I think most of the time, it’s because he can’t stop thinking of the things that he is preoccupied with. When he is interested in a particular subject, he will really be obsessed with it eg. at one time it was the Condor heroes, then Harry Potter etc.

I’ve told him to control himself (if that’s possible) and try to think of boring things when he’s trying to fall asleep. Guess I’ll get him to develop good sleep habits before bringing him to see a doctor.

Parents need to be very cautious about medicating a child with insomnia. Most prescription medications advertised on television are for adults only. In some instances, a doctor may prescribe Amitriptyline, Remeron, Melatonin, or an antihistamine.

1.\tInsomnia: Insomnia is a name synonimous with sleep disorder. It is a disorder characterized by persistent difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. This disorder can often lead one to frustration as many insomniacs are known to complain about being unable to put their mind to rest by closing their eyes for more than a few minutes a time. Different types of insomnia include, transient insomnia, acute insomnia and chronic insomnia.

2.\tSleep Paralysis: A common sleeping disorder is sleep paralysis. The disorder is characterized by transient partial or total paralysis of skeletal muscles that occurs either upon awakening from sleep or while falling asleep. The symptoms include, paralysis, when the person can neither move any part of the body nor can he speak and hallucinations, when the parson might feel someones presence around or may hear strange sounds.

3.\tSleepwalking: Somnambulism or sleepwalking as it is commonly known is a sleeping disorder where the sufferer engages in sleep activities normally associated with wakefulness while actually being in a sleep-like state. This disorder is most commonly observed in people with high levels of stress and anxiety or people with genetic factors.

4.\tNight Terror: Another commonly observed sleeping disorder is night terror or pavor nocturnus, characterized by extreme terror and temporary inability to regain full consciousness. More interestingly, a night terror can rarely be recalled by the subject. As against the normal beliefs, night terrors are distinct from nightmares. One of the most popular types of night terrors involves insects and this occurs most commonly of the female gender.

5.\tRestless Legs Syndrome: Wittmaack-Ekbom's Syndrome or more commonly known as Restless Legs Syndrome, is one of the top sleeping disorders. The condition is characterized by an irresistible urge to move one's body as a reflex action to stop odd sensations mostly in the legs, arms and torso. RLS is known to cause a sensation closely comparable to burning, itching or tickling sensation.

Is insomnia means unable to get to sleep? What about waking up automatically but unusually early? Is it due to stress which I am facing now?

I also experience the same as you. My wake up time is 3am n if I have a lot of things on my mind - ie work issues, I find it difficult to doze off. I have to force myself not to think of work but of happy stuff, then slowly I fall back into dreamland.

Sigh - wish I don't need to work.

                😢

Also wanted to add that for a short period of time when I wasn't working, sleeping was never an issue becos I know I can look forward to another day of no stress, no work but just simply relaxing.

                  😄

Thanks and I have yet to solve my problem.

Whatever I have something big the next day, I would be almost sleepless the night before.

but what can be so 'big' that make you so nervous and insomniac? presentation / emceeing/ dept meeting / management meeting/ pitching to client / multi-million dollar tender evaluation exercise/ roadshow?
