2019 P1 Registration Exercise for 2020 In-take

We are planning for a trip around Oct - Nov period.

Understand that there will be registration or orientation around these 2 months?
Should I call the schools of my choice to enquire?

Orientation is usually in Nov/Dec. On top of that, some schools may have an “admin day” in October for parents to submit supporting paperwork etc.

Neither is compulsory. Just that if your child misses Orientation, you miss an opportunity for him/her to get to know the school compound, classmates, form teacher etc. before the actual first day of school (which could be highly stressful for a P1 child).

Yes, if you want to know the exact date of the Orientation, you can call the relevant school(s) and ask. It is either already in the school calendar but not revealed yet, or the school may only decide in very late June when they are planning the Semester 2 calendar.

Hello patents, we are non native chinese speakers. But prefer our son to take chinese as his MT language. My questions are:

1- does all primary schools offer foundation level MT languages? (In case he cant keep up to standard level)
2- if no, do i need to find a primary school which offers foundation level, just to be on the safer side?
3- does taking MT in foundation level affect his PSLE result?
4- any chance we can apply for opting out if MT language? ( our native language isnt offered in singapore. Therefore taking tamil/malay/chinese are all equal to us. Its an entire new language and we dont speak any one of those at home).

At Primary 1 entry level, no school in Singapore offer Foundation subject.
When your child reach Upper Primary 5 level, then schools will start to offer either (Foundation level or Higher ) Chinese, after end of Primary 4 year-end streaming.

from P1 to P4 :

a) if your child study in a SAP school, by default, all start Higher Chinese, from Primary 1.

b) if your child study in a Non-SAP school, by default, all start Standard Chinese, from Primary 1

Only MOE can approve, whether or not a child can opt out (exempted), of Mother Tongue.

You need to submit necessary, supporting documents as evidence from doctors medical report, from educational psychologists report, if want a child to opt out, example : a child faces learning difficulty (disability). You may read up more, under another thread here

This were the 2018 dates for your reference only.

The 2019 dates will not be released until May 2019 I think.

Thanks @zac's mum. Although the dates are old, we can be sure the actuals will not differ much. It's a bad idea to be traveling between June and August if you have a 6yo pending P1 registration.

Thank you very much @phtthp for the help in answering all my questions. Feel much better after reading them. Shall battle out the MTL issue in the future if he cant cope up with it.

It is much easier for an English speaker to pick up, simply because the 26 alphabets used are all the same. There are also many similar-pronounced words (although the spelling may be different).


Chinese or Tamil have different “alphabetical” systems to learn, it’s a completely different script and moreover Chinese script is very pictorial. There’s nothing related to English at all. That’s what makes it doubly difficult for some kids. Triply difficult would be the 4-tonal sing-song pronunciation of the Chinese words.

Thank you Zac's mom. I will keep that jn mind when signing up for the P1. My child's kindergarten offers chinese only so he has been learning it since N2. Though he can read and write he doesn't speak at all. Tried berries trial class and they feel he is more of k1 standard than k2. So cant continue their k2 class.

Would you by any chance know about anyone taking a language in lieu of MTL? Like french?

Hi guys…the time is coming for our daughter! Still in a dilemma in which sch to choose and hoping for some advise…

We stay in Punggol…the 2 little one are currently in pre sch at Pasir Ris (parent’s house).

Choice 1 (Phase 2C)
Punggol Green Pri Sch / Valour Pri Sch (u/c)
Pros: within walking distance from our house
Cons: abit rush to get back by 7pm

Choice 2 (Phase 2A2)
Elias Park Pri Sch (Daddy’s former sch)
Pros: dont have to worry after sch as my parents can fetch them
Cons: need to leave house much earlier due to the horrible traffic from Punggol to Pasir Ris

Given that your kids are based in a childcare in Pasir Ris, are familiar with Pasir Ris and are likely to have travelled Punggol / Pasir Ris for the last X years, Choice 2 seems fairly straightforward.

The traffic from Punggol to Pasir Ris isn't that bad at 6.30am in the morning. Only problem is apart from driving, public transport options is fairly limited. Then again, if your kids have been in a childcare centre in Pasir Ris, this shouldn't be something new to you.
