Maths B is the regular Maths lor. F Maths was Further Math B.

Who? Me? I had 4 A levels subjects — F Maths, Maths C, Physics and Econs. I thought regular Maths was called Maths C? With my combi, I would fit into today’s contrasting subject criterion.

Those who took Maths (syllabus) B at A level are showing their age. The last year this was offered by JCs was 1982. From the 1982 J1 entry, they offered Maths (syllabus) C. Not sure about later changes.

In my mind our C maths stood for Core Maths (compulsory for all combis) = H2 now, and then F maths stood for Further Maths. I think it is also a H2 subject?


And H3 = S paper subjects? For scholarship applications purposes?

There have been so many changes over the years. But as of now, both Maths and FMaths are H2 subjects, and H3 is the "extra on top". How H3 differs from the old "S" papers, I don’t know. I guess the main reason for taking H3 is to give an edge when facing scholarship boards or university selection boards (if it comes down to interviews, etc), and, of course, some students just like to stretch themselves.

Maths C is not core and not compulsory. Those without A Maths and not in the science stream do not have to take that subject - instead they can do AO Maths (today’s equivalent of H1 Maths) as AO / A Maths / (H1) is the minimum requirement for courses like Business. I know because I was made to do AO Maths initially for the first 3 months (got a F9 for A Maths in Prelims :evil: ). If you have your sights set on a course in FASS, you don’t even have to do any Maths subjects.


F Maths is Further Maths.

H3 is the equivalent of the old S paper.

If a kid got O level HMTL for A1. what is the contribution to A level final score ? I heard there is some contribution to it. but i could not find the detail info,. can someone share ? thank you

The \"C\" in Maths C doesn't mean \"Core\". It just means Syllabus C.

That's why Chief took Maths B because it was still Syllabus B during his time.
