Janet : her preference alone is insufficient. if the majority of the girls prefer to have mid year and voice it to principal, then I am concerned she might decide to switch to having mid year exam. so far the school did not hold a briefing for parents with daughters in sec 3.
so your dd prefer weekly bite size tests right? then isn't it less stressful compared to chunky Mid year SA, u no need stress lar since dd is ok
[/quote]
Minister strongly encourages no mid yr for sec 3 - sch who are doing mid yr , their P need to report and justify to their cluster Supt for good reasons .(tats what i know fr teachers i know) -
the 1 week march holidays is a ‘small’ reward after tests. the 1 month June holiday is a longer reward after stressful mid year exam.

For March, you can go for something very short, just 2 nights, maybe. And do it over a weekend so you still have a good stretch of 5 days to revise and do other stuff. You can do something longer in June. The main thing is to make sure you plan the time well, and your kids know they have to fit their homework etc within the days left.

Yeah, I till have very slim hope for Jun..think tuitions may not have any break though..yesterday told dd that the exam timetable is out, she quickly go and search for her Sci books..but then all her time got consumed by hw..I m just thinking dd is slow maybe..why no time to do revision de.

which means even if majority of the girls prefer to have mid year and voice to the P, she will need to stick to not having mid year since this is the minister’s directive?
-
Actually Moe only set the directive. But Principal and students of that level, can overide if majority still prefer mid year SA1 to continue. Each school have some leeway, what is the best, for their level cohort. They can conduct this parents meet Tr session, to discuss how the majority feel. Esp in those kiasu O-level schools, Upper Sec 3 students might prefer. School may proceed to set SA1 exam, but maybe set not so high a percentage, and kiasu students may still prefer an SA1 with a lower percentage, than a zero SA1, to "force" them to study, prepare for sec 4 O level. Eg instead of set so high 40 % weigtage, maybe set a lower % instead, but still conduct SA1, because studying (preparing) for SA1, in a way, to some extent, already leap-frog students to prepare for final, year-end SA2, since it is a Round 1 revision. Isn’t it better, than to lump (clutter) everything towards year end SA2 exam, making it even much more stressful ?

through weekly tests, I know how my girl is faring for different subjects.
this ‘forces’ them to listen to the teachers during curriculum and put in effort to get homework done properly.
