Hi, we are currently 1km from Ats but will need to go through the balloting phase within 1km. My husband is a alumni at St hildas..and my son is a more jiak kantang boy, speaks more eng and all. Would like to ask your views if you were us, would you just go for st hildas and travel to and fro for 6 yrs (I will be driving but still..) or take the chance for ats? I could do volunteering as well so possibly be able to ballot at the phase before 1km as well...will you guys take the chance or go for st hildas...?
When you say “could do volunteering” I assume it means you have yet to be accepted into SHHK. Please check whether you can meet the minimum criteria (2 years membership, 80 hrs) as that may not be an option for you.

If your kid is less than 5yo, I don’t think you would know whether he is a potato or otherwise. In any case, there are many ways and opportunities to encourage or introduce him to Chinese if you want to do so.

Both schools are good schools. However, you risk losing it all if you place your bets with ATS because the chances are low. It could be as high as 3 applicants for 1 place in ATS. You may want to go with SHPS in Phase 2A first and wait till the last day of Phase 2C before deciding whether it’s worthwhile to jump ship. IMHO, unless you are comfortable with GYPS or some other schools as your backup in Phase 2Cs, it's better that you stick with what you have.

I have been accepted by SSHK alr…waiting for avail volunteer spots to do volunteering…So still have time actually…what is GYPS? Yeah I know the balloting is a must so taking chances here…So in your opinion I shldnt take the chance and go for st hildas? Phase 2C past history confirm must ballot one right…

You will need 80hrs and min. 2 hrs of clan membership to be eligible for Phase 2B.
          Phase 2C confirm balloting < 1km.
Phase 2B, some years if you are lucky, may not have ballot < 1km. However, I believe it is exceedingly becoming more likely that Phase 2B will ballot < 1km as more people sought out SHHK membership.

Whether you should go for SHPS depends on your comfort level. If you are comfortable about missing out a spot for both schools, you can try your luck at ATS. Failing which, your option at Phase 2Cs would be GYPS. If you are uncomfortable about missing out on either school, then better to stick to SHPS.

          GYPS = Guangyang Primary School

In the event of failed balloting at Ai Tong (Phase 2B) after clocking minimum 80 hours, you cannot go back to St Hilda anymore, because you already relinquished, given up your seat at Phase 2A, in order to come out, to try your luck balloting at 2B (Ai Tong).

Of course, if u stay less than 1 km from Ai Tong, u still have another final chance balloting at 2C, again. But if your house exceed 1 km from Ai Tong, no chance at 2C.

So, the key question u need to ask yourself, is : is it ok for you to accept this, in the event if balloting failed, then enrol your child into Guangyang (GYPS) because Guangyang will still have vacancies, at 2C Supp. It is up to you, whether want to take the chance or not. If don't want, don't even need to do any SHHK volunteer work, just enrol your child into St Hilda (Phase 2A) directly. Clocking up 80 hours at SHHK doesn't guarantee your child a seat at Ai Tong, because high chance need to ballot. Can u find out (call up) from Ai Tong school General Office (admin) : was there any recent past year whereby she doesn't need to ballot at Phase 2B, and which year was that, the children born in which year of zodiac sign no need to ballot ?

                  agreed with the other replies.

SG50 baby = damn a lot of demand at every phase of the application.

If I were you, and travelling 6 years is a little headache, I would:
                  - find house rent or buy near Tampines
                  - apply 2A1 at st hildas (90% bao jiak)
but remember, some schools ballotted during 2A1 in 2018 too until 2A2 has zero places

                  https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/education/early-balloting-for-p1-places-likely-at-chij-st-nicholas-girls-catholic-high

but not to worry, since you are outside 2KM of st. hildas, even if there is a ballot, I would think its a 52 ballot for 50 places (after the within 1KM, 1-2KM kids getting a place first)

email just came in from SHHK - did u applied for the latest event?

anyway, just imagine, everyone with 80hrs will be given a letter
there will be easily people in your situation (within 1KM of ATS)
plus the unknown number from grassroots
even 2B is risky for SG50 babies

(SHHK used to be under the no upper limit of hours. thus they can control the 2B letters issued based on the numbers of hours a volunteer clocked.
eg: letter 20 for ATS cut up at 150 hours.... at least you know there are only 20 letters from clan and unknown from GRL)

Considering that in the past when SHHK control the number of letters they issued, ATS was already in a balloting situation. With the new rule (which encourages transparency), I would assume the number of qualified applicants would increase.
