If you are talking about being a NUSH candidate for local medicine, Majors at honours level the basic triple science subjects i.e Physics, Biology, and Chemistry.

You are competing among the best of your NUSH peers for a medicine slot in NUS and NTU (not other A-level folks)

Chemistry is not enough. Biology is a must. Hard to think about taking medicine without Biology. Physics mean that you are an all-rounder.

U can probably check out the entry subject pre-requisites on the NuS admission website for NUS High Students. They say a good major cap in Chemistry and either Bio or Physics. But I guess if u can do majors for all triple sciences in NuS High then u are prob off to a very high chance of being admitted into Medicine school of Nus.

In both NUS YLLSoM and NTU LKCSom website, both schools listed only 2 sciences are required; chemistry + either biology or Physics.

You need to know all the stages in their application. For LKC SoM, during submission, beside the post secondary results requirement, you also need to submit the BMAT test results. BMAT initially was adopted by Cambridge, Oxford, UCL and Imperial, subsequently LKCSoM. Now are few more UK uni and overseas uni also require BMAT.

BMAT has 3 papers and paper 2 test on Chemistry, Physics and Biology. In Med Schools pre clinical years, Biochemistry and Physiology ( biology ) knowledge are required.

As only 2 sciences are required, not extra points are given for the 3 science during the first stage selection.
For LKCSoM, the second stage is the MMI, based on past years,of all the initial applicants, about half will be selected to attend the MMI and subsequently about 25 % will be intially offered places.

For YLL SoM, after the initally application, certain percentage of the best candidates will be selected to take the FSA and SJT. points will be awarded to each stages of the selection, those with highest sores will offered until all places are filled

For both local schools, most of the applicants ( A level, NUSH, IB) have perfect if not close to perfect academic score. To enhance applicants own profiles, applicants take up job shadowing in hospitals, do medical related ARP and CIP.

For year 1, what are school hours like?

It really depends on what CCA they took, how many electives they took, any interest group or pull out ... so everyone is different. In addition, they have at least 1 hr for lunch, and there are mentoring session and some empty slot, so that they could take other module or for pull out. Most students will also use these slots for project discussion, homework, interest group or just have fun with their friends.

for DS, his timetable is:
Mon - 4pm (assembly, half an hour recess and 1 hr lunch)
Tue - 2pm (half an hour recess, 1 hr lunch, and half an hour mentoring)
Wed - 4pm (half an hour recess and 1 hr lunch)
Thu - 6pm (2 electives, half an hour recess and 1.5 hr lunch))
Fri - 6pm (CCA, half an hour mentoring, half an hour recess, 2 hr lunch and 1 hr empty slot)

CCA are usually on Monday and/or Friday.

I guess it depends on how you define tough and challenging ... there are tests that DS just barely pass and there are some that he is at 90%, if you refer purely to marks. I think they are still getting used to the system and subjects ... especially Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. There are more self reading/study/research and discussion comparing to primary school, so the kids need to learn to be an independent learner and the ability to manage their time well.

The good thing is the teachers, seniors and peers are all very helpful and approachable. So my read is ... yes, it is tough and challenging as they are being stretched everyday, but at the same time, DS is having fun and enjoying the learning journey. I said \"stretched\" because once you do too well in a module, they will either be accelerated to the next module or attend pull out session, so that they are always being challenged.

DS doesn't have any tuition, and so far I am not aware of any of his classmate goes for tuition, as they could always book a time slot with the teacher if they really need help.

My personal view is that if the kids get into the school by DSA without going through special training (those tailored specifically for DSA, they may have done more stuff because of their interest or passion in maths and science), and if they are likely a A/A+ students in Math and Science without tuition ... they should not have any problem in coping with the challenges.

Guess i will just let him try for the DSA first…if he manage to get through, then i got to think and make a decision.


Just thought this is a school for high performers and cannot keep worry what if he cannot cope. At least it is much easier to go via IP or O level track

My child is keen to go to NUS high. Wonder if anyone can tell me about reporting day, can we send someone to go in our place if we are not in Singapore? Is reporting day the whole day or you can only turn up in the morning? Do you buy books and uniforms on that day?
