P1 Tution -- Necessary?

I always have this problem it seems…heard parents send kids to tuition earlier and I told myself I got to that too…but will end up look at the things they learn in school, and think, need mah and drags? I guess tuition ctr must be teaching a lot more than school…to establish better/good foundation…Very fast a year has passed, I have finally registered dd for Eng tuition…

A fren was telling me her P2 child scored Band2 for EL... Does the child need tuition/enrichment? I'd recommend based on... :
(1) can the child cope on his own
(2) can parents/caregivers provide the home support (for instance, teach the subject themselves)
(3) most importantly, parents' expectations
This fren's child is not coping fantastically on his own, but his parents will try to guide him using assessment books & Band2 does not bother them in the least bit; so the child will not be going for EL tuition.

yeah sky, it is abt expectatation and also the importance of the particular subj...knowing the elder's issue, I do agree foundation is important..that's why I thought P1 probably the only level I could save on the tuition fee after reading that at secondary, the language is becoming more important, the more I m my expectation is not high but it is the worry that child starts piling up the 'disabilities' and eventually difficult to U turn liao.

there will be no exams…just progressive tests or formative tests. not graded though.

it’s a good gauge to allow parents to know how their kids perform in school and also stuff like how they get along with others.
p1 & 2 can probably save on tuition. p3, there will be science and first exam. so, it may be necessary for parents to keep tabs on their kids’ progress at the end of p2.

Based on my colleagues and relatives who had successful children in universities, All their children had only started tuition in secondary 3 on wards when they started to fall off class exam results. Half of them only started tuition at secondary 4 because their children still gets that same good results in every test and exam. Dont kiasu so much, too much stresses will make your children brain absorb less. Usually the teacher will monitor so talking to the teacher is the most important. Ask the teacher in parent teacher meeting, how is your children performance really helps. 90% of people I had asked, all laughed when asked if a primary school student needs any tuition.


As what I learned, those tuition centers not necessary better than schools. Lots are worse because the time given to teach are less than school. Tuition Centers also do not care of MOE or school syllabus and follow their own way of teachings. It does help if your child really cannot cope in school but only helps a little bit, not a major change. Do not trust those lies and gimmicks from advertisements, blogs and related websites. They all only care for earning money on advertisements. Lots of the tuition centers are repeating what books had taught, all the teachings are found in books from bookstores.

Any suggestion for P1 Student care?

We are full-time working parents, thinking to put our dd in after school student care. We are afraid of not able to helping out her homework when we get back home from office(normally 7pm+).
We have only maid , no grandparents staying with us.
If we put her student care, SC will help her doing homework?
One of my fri doesn’t put her son in SC, she said her son can do homework by himself. But somehow she has her mother staying with them.
Thinking that grandma controls her grandson’s gaming and cartoon movie time.

So we are thinking SC.
I feel pity my dd that she has been in full time child care since PG (2yrs+).
I want her to relax after her school but her daddy wants SC as most of his fri do so.
Any pros and cons putting our kids in Student Care in such a young age (i mean P1)

2. They will also help the children revise their spelling / tingxie.
3. Proper meals (if you have a maid, this probably won't make a difference).
4. Regulations therefore, no TV, no phone, no computer, etc. However, it doesn't mean no 'relaxation'. Some student care will organise activities for the children - games and the occasional movie screening.
5. Make more friends.

Cons
1. Regimentation some student care doesn't allow nap time, doesn't have the shower facilities, doesn't permit the child what he / she wants / likes to do.
2. Too many friends

Given that you have a helper and assuming cost is not a concern, you can leave your child in the student care and have your helper pick her up early ~ maybe 4pm? That will reduce the time that she needs to stay in the student care.

Need to figure out and adjust the time according to interests / programmes etc.
Yes, sometimes, my daughter will complain if we picked her up too early! :slapshead:

I think for those who have alternatives (eg maid or grandparent), it probably boils down to: how confident are you that the caregiver can supervise the homework, Spelling/tingxie revision?


Some caregivers (eg bilingual grandparents) can. Some Filipino maids can supervise English and Math hw. Some mature kids themselves can even take up the responsibility themselves - parents ask kid to phone them at work and report.

*and then there are some very senior-level parents at my previous workplaces, they get the maid to bring the child via taxi to their office. And let the child sit in a spare room to do their hw. After that, maid brings them to evening tuition.
