I m the other way round..dd always locked herself in the room. I m basically unwanted by her. I ask her to eat, drink, wake her up from nap and nag her to sleep..I m not sure if she is indeed studying coz she has her earphone with laptop on says she wants to listen to songs..and if indeed studying not sure if she has her own effective ways..she just want to do it on her own and always reject my offer to help..I used to mark her paper but last week she asked my permission to mark it herself and do her own correction..and my dd2 continue with playing and her marks are going south :nunchuk:
Don’t mind me saying, you lost control liao. Yr DD so young lock you out?

When my kids study for exams, their hp all in my room. Normal days I’ll just alert them when too long using hp, but will not restrict them holding to hp as I want them to develop self-control. No earpiece as DH says it’s a bad habit & limits concentration since energy for listening to music can be better channeled to full focus on exams prep. DH thinks once hv such habits, tendency to shut others out & ppl can’t get their full attention on subj matters in discussion & pose danger when on roads as all other sounds got shut out by their favorite band. To DH, it’s an anti-social habit he does not want our kids to acquire.

We do not encourage our kids to shut parents out of their rooms. Wait till they own their place. I rmbr my M’sian intern staying with us when mum was ard, wld leave his room door half opened whenever his gfrd comes visit. He explain he’ll like to respect us as his guests just staying for short visit & usually come visit when he is not on houseman duty.

I do point to dds whenever I see someone crossing the road looking at hp when we stop at traffic lights..actually she didn't lock her room, but close the door as she switch on aircon. I can still go in just that naughty la she, sometimes she asked me dont mind go out as she wants to focus/at midst of listening to those online materials..I will 'talk' to her when I find it crosses the line to the rude side..I don't like anything that causes disharmony in the house..

on listening to songs, there was once I asked her come out to do paper outside her room..she did a while then asked if I could let her have my hp as she wants to listen to songs while doing. dd2 was noisy too so I let her..I asked her sure can focus when listening to songs ? She says else 'boring' ..so I thought ok la, listening to songs not a bad thing..dd and I share hp so we free to read all our msgs

I’m reminded of my gfrd recently shared how she discovered her girl toggle away screens to show as if she’s doing her studies, but actually watching YouTube.

So, she got her hubby to remove internet access to certain hours & she has to complete her homework but if need more time will hv to do after dinner time at desktop in living room. The extended duration will be deducted fr following day’s quota. I ustood her concern bcoz a mutual frd shared a few years’ back how his neice was found stripping in front of computer when father walked in. Even after months of counselling & thot she had been weaned off, was found she was secretly in contact with online predator.

For my family, we want them to develop good habits & self-discipline.

yup agree, this is very important..I always tell them stories that I read..when I go into the room, I dont knock, I open the door, look at her finger on the mouse and look at the screen while talking to her. She has her fair shares of chasing drama before..I knew that and hope she learnt..

              Good post Estee!

Although I didn’t allow my kids to listen to music while they were in primary schools, I relented and allowed them to do so when they reached secondary school. But somehow, I really dislike it. Caught them many times on their hp, they would say they were “selecting songs”, not giving 100% of their attention on school work. And music seems to be getting louder and louder!

Sometimes they refused to hand over their hp when I said no hp for certain timing like meal times with the extended family. Think must be stern, and the heart must not soften when I hear their pleas of “please, please”.

what is expected (target) marks for Oral to be considered ok actually...Is it more helpful for kids who already quite strong in the language but just need a little more tweaking in answering in order to score higher marks?

                Quoting our ex-EL HOD:
                EL Oral (both components)
                For A* at least 29/30
                For A at least 24/30
                top class average ~28/30

Holiday programs are useful for acquiring techniques. What should the student do if she is stuck? How do we go on talking & still keep to the point? How can we improve on our weaknesses? What are our current strengths which we can further develop?

                  lee_yl,

We’re all caring mums. All concerns are for their own good. Just that they think we’re meddling & nagging. I know how u feel abt volume getting louder. I s’times cld hear the loud music even fr earpieces when queuing for cabs. Wonder if these young ppl hv any loss of hearing.

What I did was to remind DH he was to co-parent with me, do I hope he’ll exercise his “Man of the house” authority. Then let him get it out of his mouth to kids. Maybe u can try that. You’re firm & get yr DH to be firm. Both parents sing same song & kids will know that’s the family’s expectations & rules.

Actually, I’m thankful for DH’s hand-in-Hand working on matter of screen time since they were young. Now, can see even DS slowly exercising his self-control & focus. Bcoz he’s in IP, we let him use laptop esp for projects. Sec 1 was not consistent but now, he’s got good discipline. That’s how we cld leave him to handle T2 on his own whilst we chase cherry blossoms.

My dear, Compo requires consistent practice...Still, TAS' workshop looks neat: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/575a6079044262ac9d71f11d/t/5cc80cf97e326700017c8ebe/1556614393761/Examprep1info.pdf

I agree with her that she does Not need extra EL tuition during term time. And, if she has updated materials she can still learn from, yes, it is better that she revises at her own pace in the comfort+convenience of home.
