Using Singapore Student card in the UK for discounts
-
I posted this in the Travel section, but didn’t get any responses, so seeing if I get responses in this section!
Just want to ask if anyone has used a Singapore student card (eg. from NUS/NTU) to get student discounts in the UK recently? If not, is it worth getting my daughter to buy the ISIC card before we go? We are going to the UK in 2 week’s time, so we’ve left it a bit late to ask! -
Reading through https://thesmartlocal.com/read/student-discounts-europe by The Smart Local, if discounts are what you are looking for, there isn't an uniform answer. In some places, you can get through discount with student visa while others would require a https://www.nus.org.uk/en/nus-extra/ / ISIC card. National Theatre and National Rail only needs proof of age to sign up for their https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/entry-pass and https://www.16-25railcard.co.uk/using-your-railcard/the-benefits/.
That said, ISIC is only SGD25, I would suggest go get it if she's going to be there for some time. Take a look at the https://www.myisic.co.uk/. I think you can easily recover the $25 over 1 weekend. No need to worry about where can / cannot get discounts. -
Have replied you in the https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=93578&p=1912451#p1912451.
TL;DR version:
Go sign up ISIC. Only SGD 25. -
Thanks! I know we have used foreign cards as proof of being a student; just wanted to know if it’s changed. And it seems not all places have student discounts anyway. I think we’ll just chance it. We aren’t going to that many ticketed places, and 1 child has a UK student card.

Pls share your experience when you are back. We’re leaving for London on 20 June, and I am also wondering if my son’s NTU student card can get him concession price.

Are you only visiting London, or going elsewhere as well? I notice that some places don't seem to have a student concession, based on their website info. I'm only going to be in London for 2 nights then moving on.

Dover? I've only done day trips to Dover Castle (twice with different people) - quite interesting. Never saw much else of Kent though I've passed through on trains and buses many times!

Have not planned to go Dover. Will only go if we have extra time. For now, we have planned a visit to Hever Castle, Leeds Castle and Canterbury. We will be staying a night near Hever Catsle, a night at Leeds Castle itself and a night in Centerbury. Unfortunately Hever Castle was fully booked for that period. Otherwise I would have liked to be able to stay there too. So now on get to stay at Leeds Castle. The 2 castles are suppose to be beautiful and romantic and have beautiful gardens. Only if we have extra time will be made a quick drive down to see the White Cliffs of Dover. No plans for Dover Castle.

My daughter was able to use her Sg student card in UK to enjoy student concessions at the museums. We were not able to apply her student card when purchasing train tix (on the LNER) to Edinburg, so had to pay full fare.

Thanks! I guessed the Sg card should be accepted if they have a \"student\" rate. But I have noticed that some organisations do not give student concessions now. We had to pay full fare for my daughter's train ticket too. Students in the UK also need to get a Railcard to get discounts for train tickets; they can't use their normal student IDs.

I was also quite shocked to discover that almost everything has an entry charge now, and pretty high too! Tower of London is £24.70, and that is only if you buy online; at the gate is about £27! And Westminster Abbey and St Paul's also charge around £20 now - it used to be free, but that was decades ago. I guess the wear and tear of many visitors does take a toll, but I didn't realise the ticket prices would be so high. We told our daughter to see the Abbey by herself as we've both seen it more than once and don't feel like paying that much to see it again! The Tower is more interesting, so we'll go with her, even though it must be my 4th or 5th time. -

We got student tickets online for the Tower and Westminster Abbey, but no-one asked to see any student ID when we presented the printouts. My daughter looks young for her age and they probably thought she was definitely still a student?
