Hi everyone, i just want to share my personal experience engaging helper at agency. I have hired my helper through CONNEXUS EMPLOYMENT HUB , located at Katong shopping centre.
At first , im afraid hire filipino coz a lot of bad feedback from my colleague , like difficult control, demanding, HP problem…etc. I seek for my maid agency for help to look for helper, my agent has explain to me the 3 different nationality helper ( indonesian , filipino and myanmar).
After speak with my agent, im still prefer to hire filipino to work for my family. My current filipino helper work for me almost 6 months. My Filipino helper is very good, helpful and polite. Learning curve for Myanmar helpers is typically very steep and the language barrier is high.

Yes, I'd agree with Coolkidsrock. We are engaging a new helper too, for the elders, cos the current one (Indonesian) has to return home (husband adultery) chopchop... Am told that majority of Myanmar helpers ask for mobile phone use, plus house WiFi access. In fact, a fren just sent hers back, cos when she repeatedly asked the Myanmar girl (20s, 3rd year) to help out at the kitchen, the helper could not; helper was in the midst of her gadget & replied that she did not want to help out then...& yup, even after years of training, Myanmar helpers don't seem to cook well. When we hosted this Myanmar girl for 2weeks, we had to cook for her!

hi has anyone purchased a placement fee protector? I was asked to purchased one by The Maid agency . How does that different from the waiver of counter indemnity in The Maid insurance? thank you

Not true. Start being firm abt providing Wi-Fi. Say no. If helpers (whatever nationality) wants data access, they shld spend their own money & manage within their means. They’ll value it more & not overspend.
I’ve never encouraged any eyer to pamper helpers with access to Wi-Fi. The pinos ard the vocal lot who wld choose expats bcoz some get paid wifi as part of their package.
Then some local eyers simply think it’s not going cost the family extra since they hv it in the house, but little did they realised it’s going to be costly ‘kindness’ as they’ll spend hours on end on YouTube or games. How to expect them to work? It’s like you’ve to manage ano kid on their gadgets at home.
Some eyers initially act out of compassion that the helpers hv to let their family know they’re doing OK. To me, it’s simple MISPLACED compassions. I normally tell them I’ll Lian them $10 to buy data to inform their family. After 1st mth pay, they pay us back the $10 loan.
My Mynmar frd told me that their perception is Sporeans can afford to give them anything bcoz these are very cheap to rich Sporeans. This reminded me once I met a pino girl buying my spare brand new cake mixer thot Carousell. I’ve alr reduced my price when she asked. Then when we met, she asked for further hefty reduction with a remark that we Sporeans can afford it since were so rich! The audacity of their perception of us! Or is it? Did we not encourage such perception by being “compassionate”?
Wi-Fi may be nec for our families esp with kids having to do projects. But for one coming fr their culture, giving this is ‘gold’ to them & they end up abusing the use by surfing in the day when eyers are out of right thot the night resulting in careless work in the day due to lack of energy & attention fr lack of sufficient sleep.

Our elders do not want to see any sign of a mobile phone on the helper. So when we put in that request for an experienced Myanmar one, we were told that chances are slim…
& yup, we usually pick up the placement fee coverage as well, +~$100. Our elders do not fancy repeating themselves much, so if the helper cannot remember the chores within a reasonable time frame, it’ll be a problem. -

May not a fair statement. Even if your Myanmar helper can cook, it doesn’t mean it will suit our taste buds. For example, Indon helpers like to add sugar when frying vege.

I have two friends who sent their maids (Indon/Myanmar) back to the agents after one week when they realised the helpers couldn’t cook. I feel v sad for these maids. It takes time to learn to cook what you like to eat (like sweet and sour pork, curry chicken, sambal Kang kong etc). Even though I can cook well, it took me years of experimentation and effort! Btw, both my friends can’t cook so they depend a lot on their maid to do the cooking. For me, not so much of an issue because all these years, I cook for all my helpers.
