              Hello Parents!

              Just some friendly advice:

If you are getting your child to tackle comprehension exercises in assessment books, don’t just get him to do it, mark the answers right or wrong, take note of his total marks, then move on.

What your child needs to do (what you need to do with him/her) is to take note of the difference between his answers and the recommended answers, and try to figure out where he went wrong, and why those are the recommended answers. Without this very important step, your child is unlikely to improve in his / her comprehension skills.

To be ready for the ‘O’ Level English Language Comprehension paper, you child will need to be able to:

              (1) Identify the 8 different types of comprehension questions, and how to tackle them effectively.
              (2) Use an effective 4-step method for answering Use Your Own Words questions
              (3) Answer questions that ask what is unusual or effective about an expression
              (4) Answer the special 3-mark Language Use for Impact question that asks students to identify 3 expressions in the text that show how the language used in the text does something (for example, how it makes the sea seem attractive), and to explain how the language does that
              (5) Tell if the author is using figurative or literal language
              (6) identify the different figures of speech and their functions
              (7) identify the 3 types of irony, and how to answer questions on each type
              (8) answer questions on the attitude of the author / narrator

And for the summary writing question, he should be able to:
              (1) identify main points relevant to the question
              (2) leave out unnecessary details
              (3) cut down the number of words without changing the meaning (there are a number of useful skills / tactics to be learned for this purpose)
              (4) use his own words as much as possible, but he should also know when not to use his own words, or he might end up changing the meaning, and losing his marks for content.
              (5) write fluently, using appropriate linking words
              (6) use a variety of sentence structures
              (7) use sentence structures different from those used by the author

And if your child is still struggling to answer comprehension questions despite your efforts, and despite attending tuition classes, then it is time to consider sending him / her for a crash course. (If you are interested, you can check out our thread under Tuition and Enrichment.)

It is also important for your child to spend at least 20 - 30 minutes a day reading English materials - fiction, non-fiction, novels, magazines, online articles etc.

We wish you all the best in your efforts to help your child improve in English.
