      I doubt it is that simple as being an olympiad winner or which type of olympiad winner anymore. Those who are already got into the masterclass or Einstein clubs are confirmed offered but others, there must be some qualities the school is looking for that may include passion, interests, capability and many others. And nobody knows except the school. Very difficult to gauge and speculate nowadays reading all the different feedback from parents this year... Some winners get interview, some dont even get shortlisted for selection tests..

      best is to keep working hard for that dream. ๐Ÿ™‚ :rahrah:

        based on their daily / weekly NUS High timetable schedule (if one refer to timetable), Triple Sciences is compulsory.
        They don't do Double Sciences

        If a child only (like Maths but not Science), or the other way round, (like Science but don't like Maths), is very hard to survive inside NUSH. The child likely to end up, struggling inside NUSH curriculum.

        Reason being, child will be struggling in the subject he (she) is weak in, hence need to spend a lot more time on the weaker subjects, at the expense of other subjects which initially might be strong in, but in the end could also be dragged down by the weaker subjects, because of the substantial amount of time required to \"buck up\" on the weaker subject(s).
        This is rather misleading.
        That is an assumption that a kid will only do well if he likes a certain subject but that may not be the case.
        Some just find certain subject very boring, eg, math...you need to spend a lot of time doing tedious calculation, or biology, which may require a lot less calculation but can be dry to some kids.
        However, from what I understand that most will not struggle in NUSH, except a few ASEAN scholars, mainly coz of the pace & language problem. Most donch even have tuition.
        Frankly, if the kids managed to survive the paper & practical tests to get the CO, then there shouldn;t be any worry. Why would a school offer a CO if the kid will end up being a liabilty?

          Is your Daughter in p5 this year ? Is she eligible for application this year ?

              I think no one know the exact answer other than the school themselves, and they could even change by next year ... heard that also planning to explore non math and science subjects like weiqi (as a lot of those doing well in weiqi are also doing well in the school ... eg. most of the weiqi dan students got gold in various olympiad competition).

              Through all the hear/say/see ... my personal conclusion (I am sure others could have different experience or know of example that prove otherwise) is that the school try to gauge on 2 areas ... passion in the subjects and abilities to excel in the subjects.

              On abilities ... it includes prelim score for Math and Science (was told need minimum A for both), awards in maths and science related competition (note each competition has different \"value\" ... depending on participants of the competition). Usually the more local participants and across more schools, esp the GEP schools, the higher the \"value\" in term of the awards. For example, if you look at SASMO ... you hardly see participants from the GEP schools.

              On passion ... did the students go beyond PSLE topics due to their interest, and how they deal and work on the round 2 assessments (again doing well in competition is an indication that the students have gone beyond PSLE topics). So for example, if DD didn't get to second round in NMOS, what does she do subsequently ... like ok, it is what it is? or knowing what she lack and working towards RIPWMC/APMOPS and etc?

              Abilities is always easier to assess and they have their first round test to help to gauge, and also the round 2 stations. Passion is mainly assess through observation on how the students approached problems and challengers.                 My two cents:

                I would say an aptitude in sciences is important , and also maths. Honestly the exposure of science is very little in primary school so it is hard to know if they have some real interest. And to top it, it is all bundled into one science subject. If a child dislikes maths, and doesnt like the whys and what happens of things around us then NUS high is not the school for him/her. The target for any child in secondary school should not be to survive but to thrive.

                All three sciences and Maths form part of the core curriculum till year 3 then from year 4 with subject specialization, Maths and double science is compulsory ( includes computing studies) . The 4th optional subject could be science/arts/humanities.

                There are students who went on to do undergrad in humanities with scholarships , It is not because they were not good in sciences, it is because they are very much interested in humanities. Because at the end of the day , with Maths and sciences having a greater weightage on the MCs( modular credits), the CAP is going to be badly affected if he/she cannot do reasonably well in them.

                Going to NUSH doesnt mean you are closing off the humanities . But if a child feels science /maths is not his cup of tea ( or milo) , then he better focus on other schools

                  Funny you said most dislike bio because recently I met many kids who opted to read Life Sciences and bio in uni after A Levels.. I was rather curious abt the choices if it was easier to get in or there is actually a huge fanbase for bio and bio related careers.

Will remain as hot and demanding for a very long time.

                    BTW, I am not from Life Sciences field. But I'm very sure the life sciences scientists have a very vital role to play in the future.

                      I am (was) from the Life Sciences field. Yes it is trendy ever since year 2000 when govt built the Biopolis. If u love studying Bio (I did), go for it. But the job prospects arenโ€™t fantastic. Most positions are tied to research grants, which last 3 years. I didnโ€™t consider such contracts a secure job at all.


                      The only secure position to climb to is the Principal Investigator position. How many of those in this tiny island can there be?

                        It is more of because Bio is more boring at the start, a lot of memorization and less logic when compare to the other subjects. Most of the kids there are those with strong logic ... so more likely not to like subject that need a lot of memorization (cells part, digestive systems, and etc). However, like and dislike could change as they progress when they are exposed more to the interesting area.
