CHIJ St Nicholas Girls'
-
My younger girl is in P4. There has been no updates so far from school since 2 yrs ago. Initially l thought it will be 12 and below looking at previous years’ mean score from P2 - P3 of the same cohort. But looking at the cutoff points set for Sec 1 HCL in 2022 as 14 points, the new AL affiliation cut off may be in the range of 13-14 (personal view).
Based on current T score for affiliation of 230, it is not even close to the top 10% (usually in the range of 250 and above deps on each cohort). Some of the Sec 1 girls who got into St Nicks are not eligible to take HCL. -

Just want to comment on this.
Some of the Sec 1 girls who got into St Nicks are not eligible to take HCL.
Eligibility to take HCL in Sec school is based on any one of the below:
1) top 10% OR
2) top 30% with A star in CL OR
3) top 30% with A in CL and Distinction/Merit in HCL
Eligibility based on new AL is
A) AL 4-8 OR
B) AL 9-14 with 1/2 in CL or Distinction/Merit in HCL
Current affiliation t-score 230. Is 230 about top 30%?
So anyway whoever is not eligible in 2019 sec 1 by affiliation, could have scored 230 with an A in CL and did not take HCL, so hence not eligible. -
230 ...
isn't Top 30 percent
of entire PSLE cohort
(thousands of P6 students across Singapore taken PSLE), yet.
Top 30 percent cohort is way higher, but still within 23x range
250 and upwards, fall within Top ... 10 percent
In St Nick, out of Total 2019 P6 classes, 5 classes are taking HCL
Only 1 class isn't
At the end of 2018 P5, after trying out HCL for one full year (P5), if any student decide to opt out of Higher Chinese at end of P5, they can be transferred out to this class, that does not take HCL. Students inside this class take Standard Chinese, at Psle
St Nick, being an SAP school -
only offer Higher / Standard Chinese.
No Foundation Chinese, in this school
sharing ...
For 2019 P6 batch (born 2007), in our Mid-year P6 SA1 exam (held in May 2019) -
for those 5 Higher Chinese (\"gao hua\") classes in our school, none of the pupils scored below 80, for Standard (\"bu hua\") Chinese
This is because Higher Chinese being slightly more difficult,
we were taught more Chinese vocabulary hence learnt more vocab, this had benefited and helped us (pupils) in our Standard Chinese.
The constant exposure to \"higher order Open-ended Comprehension questions asked and thinking skills in Answering HCL\" questions had also trained us well, hence we were equipped to tackle Standard Chinese Comprehension questions.
Moreover, every Monday without fail, for two years consecutively in Upper primary (P5 and P6), all HCL students compulsory, must stay back after school for 2 hours duration, from 2 pm to 4.15 pm, where St Nick \"pump\" and \"drill\" us faithfully, week after week, be it rain or shine. It is free tuition
=============================
At PSLE, when students take Higher Chinese (HCL), it doesn't imply that definitely they will obtain (achieve) at least a minimum (+1 is a Pass)
HCL students can get zero bonus point, if they
1)
failed Higher Chinese
Reason ?
maybe because wrote HCL zuowen out of point, & unfortunately the score received from the other section, HCL Main Paper 2 component itself, is not high nor strong enough to \"pull up\" the failed HCL zuowen section to across the hurdle passing marks 50 (upon 100), hence cannot rescue, overall failed
Or
2)
the P6 student's Tscore itself didn't fall into Top 30 percent bracket, although she did manage to pass HCL paper
Hence, SEAB couldn't award this pupil any HCL bonus point
example
say, this student's Tscore, is 228
228 or 229 Tscore ... is still Not within Top 30 percent yet
On PSLE results released (announcement) date, around coming (21 to 25 November 2019) period,
the moment see a (+ 1 or +2 or +3) for HCL bonus, means that P6 pupil is inside (within) the Top 30 percent
Bonus
+1 : Pass (50 to 64 marks)
+2 : Merit (65 to 79 marks)
+3 : Distinction (≥80 marks)
Ungraded\tmeans below or <50 marks -
Just to check if anyone has any offhand numbers on the estimated numbers of affiliated girls or % of the cohort admitted to sec 1 each year based on 230? 60%?

When we were in pri sch, during the MTP in Jan/ Feb, they would always announce % 250 and above, and % 230 and above, and from what I noted down and to address your last question, it is more. Didnt they announce this year?

Years ago, the ex-principal mentioned that 230 cut off point is a ‘‘comfortable’’ score for the girls to achieve. I do not recall any additional info on such data in recent years.

I got the numbers from the MTP, did you attend? It was always one of the first slides. So anyway, it is more than what you have written, so that answers your question.

The percentage of P6 students who ma naged to meet 230 affliation Cut-off tscore, able to come back continue O-level Secondary for another 4 more years last year (2018), is way much higher than 60 % .

Principal flashed these actual percentage figures on slides inside the school hall in January, beginning of each new academic Year ( Term 1) start. Many current St Nick parents know what is this figure (%)
However, due to some P6 students accepted DSA into IP schools like RGS, Nanyang Girls High, National Junior College, etc they will leave St Nick, hence released their vacancies, for outside students to enter.
However, there are also a big number of our own St Nick primary school students who prefer & choose to remain, stick back to our own Secondary school, even though their PSLE Tscore are above 260, high enough to qualify them to enter RGS / NYGH, because ours is a mission school, after all. Some picked St Nick (IP), affliated to Eunoia Junior College, while others chose, prefered or pro O-level track, even though their Tscore exceeded 258, qualify for IP. It all depend on your own daughter's learning style, to decide between IP or O-level, which learning track she herself feel more at ease, more comfortable with, more confident in
