the Eng tuition for O and IP will be different is it?

Centers that have IP and O classes are different, that is why they name their classes as such. Some centers dont restrict which one you join, eg O can join IP class if you want, you wont get to learn the O level components but that’s your choice. Some centers say that IP must join IP class, O can only join O class.

oic .. happened the one I enquired only offered 1 prog..that's why I was thinking oops, how to reserve slots as we wont know the psle results yet..

@Mks. Different, but haven't compared how much different. Summary, Comprehension may be similar across O+IP. IP Language Arts has an examinable Literature paper segment. OLevel Compo is varied, can be Descriptive/Narrative/others; IPCompo is mainly Argumentative & Expository. It's as MIG explained.

I quit all tuition when my DD1 got into Sec 1.

We were totally hands off, hardly checked if she did her homework or not. Didn’t even know if she was coping well or not. IP consists of what components we also don’t know & don’t care.

Very soon… Somewhere in April last year, 4 months into IP Year 1, DD1’s form teacher called to inform me that she would need to buck up, especially for her English. We then signed her up for English tuition at this popular Centre. However, Weekends slots were all full and finally we got a slot when she reached Sec 2!

Sec 1 definitely can afford to quit all tuition and observe because Sec 1 is not an important year. Can go slow, go smell flowers but end of the day if not doing well then don’t panic lor.

Another important thing to note is the availability of home support. Some parents can claim no tuition but they are very hands on and are able to guide. I am fortunate that DH is able to guide my 2 girls in anything under the sun. So even when I said we didn’t have tuition, except Chinese/Eng, my hubby is there to watch over them.

            Mrs KS,

Most lower secondary tuition classes are not full. I signed up for a neighbourhood Eng tuition in sec 1 semester 1, but my kid said it was not applicable at all in school. Quit after 2 terms. Now no more tuition in Eng but surviving.

Perhaps get her to do assessment books during the hols if you want. But frankly, she’s gonna want to veg after PSLE.

All along, DD1’s English is never her strongest subject. Or maybe SCGS has higher expectations for English? My girl was like a lost sheep during the transition from P6 to sec 1. Poor time management due to the need to cover lazy project mate’s duty’s plus heavy involvement in CCA and VIA.

Btw, DH now then mentioned to me DD1 sec 1 term 1 DD1 maths fail, history fail, fail until left right upside down! 😂

Nonetheless, the tumble has been a positive experience for all of us. As parents, we learnt that while we may go hands-off, we can’t be totally unaware of what's going on. Girl on the other hand also learns the importance of managing her time properly.

Last time I actually asked ds to try finish some psle assessment to keep the minds active . At least 2 pages a day before all the computer games, n tv prog.
A common Eng assessment book for Sec 1 is editing - should be easy for the kid after psle - editing for Sec 1 is on grammar skills.

Yes, prob diff Sch diff standards
IP yr 1 prob more difficult than Os for some Sch too
Frankly, I din take note too, after psle is like put down a huge boulder to parents . So tired le.
lucky my chill kid din fail any subjects in sec 1; can pass HCL in lower Sec , this make me continue to din take note till upp Sec lor.

DS HCL always around pass. SA1 managed to bring up to merit. Prelims dropped but still merit. No tuition. Wonder if can opt for CL in IP school? Or must take HCL?
