      hi chenlaoshi,

for students to study Secondary Chinese literature, 文言文, like \"三國演義\" or \"孫子兵法\", may we know what's the criteria like ? must the P6 student score minimum grade A (75 to 100) in PSLE \"Standard\" Chinese, or minimum a \"Pass\" in PSLE \"Higher\" Chinese ? Thank you

Hi phtthp, St Nicks Secondary used to offer Chinese literature as an O level subject during my time, not sure about now but I believe this subject is still around.

Chinese lit is accepted as one of the compulsory humanities in the L1R5 for entry into JC. We had half our class taking a subject combi of triple science + Geography, the other half taking triple science + Chinese lit. During Chinese lit lessons, they would go to another classroom to combine with another 20 girls (their combi was double Science + History + Chinese lit). I dunno what criteria of CL grades they had to meet in Sec 2, but mostly it was due to interest and they chose this subject combi during Sec 2 when submitting the form. The interest must be there. Other than that, it is extremely easy to score if you can memorize all the sample answers (according to my seatmate, the O level qns were quite predictable - just regurgitate and score A1!)

I thought C Lit is an upper sec subject. Why would the eligibility criterion trace back to PSLE.

i see, because thought they looked at both end of Sec 2 Chinese results, plus also your past PSLE results combined, not just EOY Sec 2 results alone

Not sure, but i would imagine that if it is an upper sec subject, and if ere is any eligibility criteria, it would not trace back to PSLE. It is like whether they let you take pure science or combined science in upper sec, they cannot be tracing back to PSLE science grade, , most likely they will just look at lower sec science grade.

Erm, I don’t think St Nicks has combined science. The girls have enough caliber to do at least 2 pure sciences. Or have things changed recently?

                  you are correct

there isn't any Combined Sciences subject combination, in St Nick Upper Secondary (3 and 4) O-level

for OP Upper Sec @St Nick, subject combination include

                  - Triple Sciences + combined Humanities (including compulsory Social studies)

                  or

                  - double pure Sciences + double Humanities

Oh was this discussion abt st nicks? I thought it was about C Lit.

Edit, So I gave an illustration of how schools will most likely not trace back to PSLE grades to decide if one is allowed to take a certain subject in upper sec.

One of the IP schools I know has a requirement that you have to score A* for CL or Merit in HCL and top 10% in PSLE before you can be considered for their bicultural studies programme in Sec 3. Although I personally do not agree with such “policy” (because you are effectively penalizing late bloomers), it is possible for Sec sch to look at both end of Sec 2 Chinese results plus past PSLE results as selection criteria to study Chinese literature in Sec 3/4.

So which is also why I wrote “not sure”, and “most likely”. And again, I was not referring to any school in particular. I am not sure and think most likely they wont look at psle, but ok, so maybe at least one school does. And I have to agree that, that is not nice and they should really say it in the psle choose your sec sch booklet, imagine you want to do BSP-C but didnt know you wont be allowed to do that 3 years after your PSLE due to your psle grade.
