          Yah loh.

Anyway she left without any drama. Agent was responsive and reasonable. Not one of those who totally takes the helper’s side.

In any case I wished her well and hope that she finds a good family to work with soon.

sometimes when we are nice to FDWs, they try to crawl over us and take advantage of our kindness. I think my FDW will cry alot when I terminate her service when sending her off at changi airport. actually, she extended with me for another 2 years and remaining 1 more year to complete, since she demanded her leave entitlement, I will let her go and she'll forgo her job and start all over again. I've never done any evil in my whole life and this time I can't be help and hopefully no bad karma befall me.

May I ask if it is a requirement to give 15 days of paid home leave with airfare after completion of 2 yr contract?

                Star,

Honestly, MOM hv no regulations for paid home leave, even tho Minister Louis Ng presented a qn to parliament whether this can be put in law for FDW. However, no rqmts does not mean it’s a good idea to force it down a FDW to accept it as a term. A lot will depend on yr u’stand’g and negotiation.

The fact is, for many years, the common practice in Spore is to offer 2 weeks’ homeleave after every 2-year contract (not for yearly as there’s never yearly homeleave for whatever nationalities). So, if u hv a good helper whom u think u wld like to retain for ano 2-year contract, then it makes sense to let her come back satisfied that she’s getting what most other FDWs gets. This is to be negotiated and if she thinks she prefers to hv her airfare encashed instead, then it is up to you to agree. Some eyers bring their helpers along to countries their FDW but do recognize this is not the same as going back to her family. So, like for my family, my previous Indo maid goes for paid church camp with us to M’sia, but we still encash the airfare for her to keep. She had gone on 2 homeleaves in her previous 4 years with our family & she just wanted more cash for her kids’ education. Years down the road, we didn’t bring our Mynmar single maid along solely coz it’s very troublesome to apply for visa entry to M’sia, so we still encash for her & she gets to stay home on lighter duties.

More importantly, my decision hinges on encouraging them to return after a long 2-year absence with their family, go home and bond & catch up with all her favorite home food, etc. If we think abt ourselves, even when we’re away fr our families & frds, we’ll feel homesickness. JMO on equal treatment & compassion. They’ve given up home comfort to serve our families far fr her own homecountry, so ....

Finally, every of our employment contract comes with terms of pay & leave, etc. Most FDWs do hv frds or heard fr home what kind of leave every other FDW gets. For ourselves, Employment Act provides for a min of 7 days’ AL yearly for any employment contracts covered under EA & if our company provides only 7 days’ AL, they’re not wrong but this company will find it hard to get eyees in Spore when Mkt practice accord 14 days AL. Similarly, yr maid will prefer to change eyer if u’ve not been ‘competitive’. They’re still humans & will compare to get (if not better terms) similar mkt practice benefits for FDW.

Anyway, they’re not paid during that period of leave, just the airfare. You can apply for levy refund once she’s on renewed WP. Personally, I think 2 weeks for 2 years far away fr home is reasonable. Don't u think?

I have this thinking, you can have compassion and try to understand their situation but do not get emotionally vested in their situation. Don’t get sentimental, maintain an employer/employee relationship. They are your employee. I believe in treating them with respect but I do not buy the treat them as a family member thing.

I hear a lot of we are kind to them or treat them well and they do not appreciate it. It is your prerogative, how much kindness you want to extend to them. But don’t harbour any expectations of your kindness being reciprocated. They are not obligated to return your kindness. All you can ask for is for them to perform their duties satisfactorily.

If you want to ‘reward’ them, be it cash, home leave, or off, etc, be clear about what the ‘reward’ is for. Past performances or is it for retention/ motivation. If the reward is for past performances, it should not have any strings attached. If it is for retention/ motivation, then expectations should be set out clearly.

Agree. Good to be kind but do not hv misplaced compassion.

In Star’s case, she’s new to maid hiring. So she’s learning a lot. Good to find out & know more - rules, regulations, practices, etc
