      Hi

Hows the school? Any insights on the Arts dept/programs? thx u!

There is an online petition for the current principal to be out of tkss. Not sure what’s the story behind it. :siam:

I believe it's because she removed alot of the sch activities that students felt was important and basically removed the fun out of the sch n made it too academically focused. Some students feels that she's ruining the sch n taking the life of the sch away I guessed :yikes: :frustrated:

Hi, I am a female student who just finished PSLE, I am wondering since there is a girls’ school, does that mean there will be a lot more males than females in TKSS?

Secondly, I don’t know whether i should apply to TKSS or TKGS, other than the gender of students, what is the difference between the two schools?

In choosing a Secondary school, for next 4 years, below are some factors to consider

          (1)

Distance wise, which school is nearer to your house ?
does the school that u prefer, provide any school bus one way in the morning, to bring u to school, or don't have ?

          (2)

Niche programme wise : find out what are the unique Talent programme, that both schools offer ?

          Eg
TKGS : offer Music elective program

          (3)

CCA wise : find out which school offer the Cca, that you want to join, for next 4 years

          TKSS (CCA)

          https://tanjongkatongsec.moe.edu.sg/ccas/cca-information-to-parents/

          TKGS (CCA)

          https://tkgs.moe.edu.sg/student-development-programme/co-curricular-activities

          (4)

          TKSS
In a class of 2019 Sec 1, Total how many Express stream classes are there ?

In each of these Express stream classes, find out roughly, how many boys vs. how many girls ?

Are you comfortable, with the ratio of boys vs. girls ?

          (5)

Study the subject combination available carefully in both schools, at Upper Sec (3 and 4)

Is there any special subject, that u wish to learn (pursue) ?

          example

          note that
TKGS offer Economics, but TKSS doesn’t offer Economics

TKGS (turn to page 198), check in detail the Sec (3 and 4) subject combination

TKSS (turn to page 199), check in detail the Sec (3 and 4) subject combination

because once u choose a Sec school, you will be there for the next 4 years, until your O level is over

          https://beta.moe.gov.sg/files/s1-posting-english.pdf

          (6)

On 16 November 2019, coming soon, both schools conduct Open house, from 8.30 am or 9 am onwards

Attend both Open house, ask the (VP, Teachers, HOD, students) there any questions that u have come prepared with.
          eg.

can ask, how was the GCE O level performance, in both TKSS / TKGS, last year (2018), 2017 and 2016 ?

          compare & contrast, for past 3 years (2018 to 2016, A level batch) -
between these 2 schools, which school has a higher percentage of L1R5 less than, or equal to 9 (Raw score) ?

          Why Raw score 9 ?

          reason -
because in some Junior college (Not in all JC), in order to take on 4 H2 subject combination at JC1, some JC are rather particular, in that, they only allow (permit) those students with Raw score 9 or below, to take 4 H2. It is stated clearly on their own JC website. You can check online, yourself
Otherwise, above 9, they only allow students to take (3 H2, 1 H1) combination, but not 4 H2

Temasek Junior College, is one fine example, of this type of JC
can read TJC ( JC1 ) subject combination \"Pre-requiste\" requirements, here

          https://www.temasekjc.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u550/Academic/JC%20Programme/JC1%20Subject%20Combination%20and%20Prerequisites%20%282019%29.pdf

and there are (TKSS / TKGS) students who entered TJC / VJC / Dunman High after their O-level, since these 3 JCs are located in the east too

From there, gauge which school u prefer, or feel more comfortable (confident) to be in

Most likely it has being managed internally.

Hi, anyone attended last week’s TKSS open house? I missed the open house, would like to know how do you find the school, the principal and teachers? Thanks.

My child put 1st choice as TGSS. May I Know if there is any chance to be offered HMT if the PSLE score is not qualified HMT condition? Like based Sec one year end exam result?

Yes, when they first started in January there will be a test conducted by the Chinese department. If ur child meets the criteria he/she can take HCL. Only those with CL A* or HCL merit needs not go thru the hassle.

Thank you very much for your kind feedback! I am a little bit surprised to know the test is before they start Sec one. My kid may forget his CL during the holiday:P

Oh ! This is Excellent, GOOD news !

By letting students sit for entrance Chinese subject test early in the beginning of January Term 1, this will greatly benefit Sec 1 pupils, as it means that they can have an early head start into HCL, for those who pass (clear) the entrance test,

compared to some other Secondary schools that do not provide such similar Chinese entrance tests in January. In contrast, only when students reach the End of their Sec 1, then based on their (Standard Chinese results + overall year end Sec 1 results), then allow them to Appeal to study HCL (Sec 2).

But by then, isn't it a bit late, because this means that pupils would have already missed out, lost out one precious, valuable long year of studying HCL ?

Why is TKSS one, the correct, right strategy (approach) ?

                        Because

                        Learning a language, takes time.
One cannot simply master a language, overnight.
It is bit by bit, slowly \"accumulated\", over a long period of time. Han yu pin yin : \"xue yu yan, shi man man de lei ji \". That's how language works. Thus, the earlier one start, the better !

Moreover, HCL (in Secondary school), is a lot more challenging & tougher than HCL ( in primary school, at P5 and P6).
Even if one score Merit or Distinction in primary school HCL, +2 or +3 bonus points, doesn't mean can sail through easily in HCL, Secondary school

                        Kudos,
to Tanjong Katong Secondary school Principal, VP (Academic section), Chinese HOD and all Chinese teachers inside Chinese department, for being understanding and kind enough, to let PSLE students have a second chance, by offering Sec 1 pupils learn HCL early

This shows that TKSS care for her students.
TKSS show empathy, \"hen hao\" (very good)
very few Secondary schools conduct entrance test, for those want to take HCL.
Many schools \"can't be bothered\" to walk the extra mile, by conducting Chinese test. After that, still got to mark some more. Many schools just conveniently rely on MOE letter.

                        I :salute:

                        let's give TKSS
A big round of applause < clap hands >

                        ===========================

                        Dear busymum0607,

this last month of December 2019 holiday, do prepare your son / daughter for entrance Chinese test.
Go for it, jia you (x3) ! Wish your child, all the very, very best !
