Hi
My girl starting p1 next year. Looking for 1-1 tutor for her , preferably a female teacher. Okay to go to tutor house or tutor come to our house. Have tried teaching my girl myself but driven to frustration because she is just not grasping simple concepts like tens and ones. Am at my wits end.
Initially thought of those enrichment centers but I don’t like those that just aim for profit. -

Hope u don’t mind me asking...have you tried using tactile Math manipulatives that she can touch & feel? Eg tie a bunch of 10 chopsticks in one bundle. That’s a “ten” and individual loose ones (eg 3 loose one) - to show eg. Thirteen is 1 tens & 3 ones.

Heard from a Math education expert that very young children (especially lower primary) need very concrete examples to grasp counting, grouping, addition etc.
Writing numbers on paper (like what us adults are so used to) is not going to do anything in their brain or help them grasp the concept. It’s too “abstract” for them because they haven’t reached the developmental milestone at that age.
Just sharing from my experience with my boy, when he first started in P1. -
Are P3 expected to know multiplication well ? dd keeps 'adding' :faint:

Multiplication is the concept of repeated addition. Nothing wrong with that.

Your DD2 is P2 going to P3 right? So it’s fine. Next year in P3 then the ‘Cher will teach them the multiplication times tables.
Many kiasu parents will force their kids to memorize the times tables. DO NOT FALL FOR THAT. I find that it is more beneficial for the kid to grasp the concept. It is a longer lasting foundation. When the kid understands that if he forgets the times table (under exam stress or whatever), he can calmly *add* from the previous number, he won’t fall apart. -

Actually I was hoping for the memorisation part..but she just got so used to adding, which I guess probably her teacher taught them this now..I kept telling her, by the time you get yr ans, yr classmates would have finish whole paper liao..ok ok..so probably we just wait fo a while more, wait for teacher to start that..MrsKiasu\" post_id=\"1951719\" time=\"1575589253\" user_id=\"43981:

She will have some tips for the kids also.

After building the concept, my boy’s school teacher helped them “memorize” the 4 times table by using a song. All sing together in class. And then 6 times table also got some turn the fists & see the fingers trick, don’t need to memorize everything so dry...
And then the boys came up with their own exam tip: write down the more difficult times tables (eg 7 and 8 times table) in one corner of the paper before you start. Then u can refer to it easily.
Don’t worry about not enough time in exams. There is plenty of time for the kids to get through and still have time to check at least once. 别急 cos they will improve with practice. Once my boy repeatEd many many times practising with adding 3s, by now it is ingrained into him. It’s just a longer way of memorizing, but with understanding. If memorize without understanding, sure forget or mind blank out. -
I remember dd1 had her memorisation done earlier so this dd2 keeps using adding I find like one kind. I even asked her how she wants to do it…using Eng or Chi…for both dd1 and I, we use Chi, like 三二六that kind, she looked at me one kind also haha…ok like you say, sing song more interesting.
