      Dear parents,

I searched this forum and found that all the ipad related matters are on ipad type etc

My child will be starting JH1 in 2019. We look forward to it!

I am concerned about that an iPad with wifi means a big phone in the hand at any one time.
Because if you think about it, kids these days, they don’t use phone service, just endless texting and social media.

I am concerned that my child will be catching up on social media in between lessons or texting away?

To start on a right foot, I have set some guidelines for my child - screentime, apps to be available on ipad.
But I would like to hear from parents here on any other things you have done for your child with regards to screentime. Here I mean screentime for apps not related to use in school.

My child’s device usage needs to be improved and I am working on it.
I understand discipline etc is important, but once a device lands in anyone’s hands, it’s hard to resist.

Even adults can be guilty of too much screentime…

Thanks for any advice you have on helping our kids control their device use

As the iPad is a requirement in njc, parents may I know what are the apps that are used by your child in school? is it Safari (for research), class dojo , simple utilities like email, dictionary , scanner … What else.

Thank you in advance. This is so I can set appropriate app limits, after all the child still has a phone for use eg social media.
I have even heard from a top JC that students sometimes set up instagram for their cause, eg. CCA , etc

          Thanks again

            Hi yamyam

            thanks so much for sharing!

I am using iphone, so in a way, everything is set out.

So it is mainly Google classroom?

My girl's main objection of restrictions is that she is worried of embarassment when her apps lock down on the iPad,say for eg. Safari.
But then she also the iPhone.

I feel as if I need a spreadsheet to calculate iPad and iPhone screentime and limits, if being extreme.

I hope more parents will share here. Cos in the end if parents work together to safeguard our kids then my child won't be saying \"But they are allowed to have this app in their iPads !\"

            :?

Of course certainly we as parents must teach our child well, and educate them about responsible use …

But of all, I find the device use, overuse, unintended use or passive browsing - phones are the most tricky to control , even we as adults also sometimes overuse…

Would like to purchase 2nd hand textbooks used by NJC students, please PM me if you have the following literature text.

                1) Animal Farm by George Orwell (New Longman Literature edition, hardback)
                2) Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare (Shakespeare edition, paperback)

                Thank you !
                Hi parents,
Are animal farm and julius caesar the literature books for JH1? Maybe i should ask my child to have a first read (she reads like lightning speed)? I know maybe not a good idea as it's better to read with teachers? But she has nothing very much to do till Jan 6.. she is also wanting to do some work ..

In my personal opinion, reading literature books ahead of time doesn’t help much in preparing for school next year. If your child really enjoys reading and you think it’s the best way for your child to occupy his/her time until school reopens, then encourage your child to spend more time in our public library. There are many wonderful books there to be discovered.

is following 4 H2 Science subject combination permitted (allowed) ?

                        - H2 Maths,

                        - H2 F Maths,

                        - H2 Chemistry (compulsory, for Science stream students)

                        - H2 Physics

If not allowed, but student keen in F Maths, what subject combination is then allowed, using which contrasting Arts subject (Econs / Eng lit / Chinese Lit / History / Geog / ICT) ?
                        Thank you
