All About Ballet

my girl has been learning ballet since 2.5 years old following RAD syllabus, she is 6 now - is it a must to learn to do split? I don’t see her ballet school enforcing this, and the ballet teacher said ballet is more of movements and split is more on gymnastics?

My daughter is complaining of muscle cramps after her session yesterday. What do you usually do to ease the pain?
How old is your daughter and how many classes does she have in a week? Mine complained of muscle sores few years ago and I was told by the teacher that it was common after they did some \"difficult\" stretching. Nevertheless, I still brought her to a nearby GP and he gave her a muscle ointment to ease the pain. Daily stretching also helps a lot. Hope she's getting better! -

It is not a must to learn to do split at that age. It really depends on the teacher. Many teachers I know don’t enforce a proper stretching routine in younger classes because at that age, they may lose interest in ballet if the teacher does anything that is painful or dry. For younger classes, it’s more of learning some ballet basics in a fun environment to stimulate their interest in dance, and then only at ages 7 or 8 do they start to be more serious.

Most dance schools try to take in students from age 2.5 or 3, but this is mostly from the business point of view. At 3 yo, children do not pick up real ballet steps in class. It’s more of a creative movement class. Even at age 5 or 6, the RAD syllabus is relatively simple, because children are not cognitively aware of their bodies enough to learn real ballet. So if you wish to just expose your daughter to ballet, get them moving and dancing at a young age, starting at 4 or 5 is fine. If you wish to enrol them in pre ballet, they’ll be doing a lot of creative movement and simple steps. Nothing like using the barre or doing pirouettes.
Hi everyone. I'm wondering when you think it is a good time for a girl to start trying out ballet classes. And also, any recommendations for ballet classes near Bukit Merah / River Valley area?

What age must kids learn to do splits in ballet? Is it a disadvantage to not be able to do splits at say 7-8yo?
Is height (too tall or short) a disadvantage in ballet? -

There is no required age where kids must be able to do splits. However, around 7-8, children can focus better and understand their bodies and it is a good time to start flexibility training. At younger ages, stretching is also done but mostly kept to simple ones. Front split is quite hard for young children to grasp. Also, I must add that stretching complements ballet training as it lengthens muscles and to some extent aids the student in getting the leg higher up. However, flexibility is not everything. Therefore, being able to do splits does not necessarily mean a child is a better dancer, only a more flexible one.

As for height, for professional companies they do take that into consideration as dancers need to fit into the overall look of the company. For children ballet, not at all. But I must add though, that tall students tend to have longer and better lines, as their legs and arms tend to be longer.

Thanks! Is it common for students do do twice a week from Grade1 onwards, for the full year (instead of later half of year nearing exams)?

Most schools do once a week and only start coaching six months before the exam. Only for major grades do the girls come in twice a week. However, I do know of some schools that want the girls in twice a week at younger grades but they are the minority. If they are just doing RAD syllabus though, twice a week all year round is not that beneficial to the child given that grade 1 work isn’t that difficult or classical.
