Are there any cloth masks which can function similarly to the surgical masks yet can be washed to re-use?
      No.

However, given that most people aren’t using the masks properly, you can wear anything over your nose / mouth and pretend it works. Same-same anyway.

If you want something reusable, invest in a good gas mask. Works against coronavirus, heinekenvirus, tigervirus. Indonesia sending their love? Works as well. If there’s a protest, you will already have the right equipment to join in too. Last but not least, it looks way cooler than normal masks 😉

i hv seen those (in HK protests) wearing colourful masks. Maybe those are cloth masks which prevent our saliva from spreading…

My family has the Xpure masks, I find it not bad for haze, as well as virus. My younger one always gets cough, so he wears it quite often. They are fabric, N95 filter, washable, and waterproof. For normal cotton masks, they are not effective for virus as they are not waterproof. We've had it for half a year and still looks new despite washing so many times. There is a test done on these masks.

There is cloth that absorbs & prevent our saliva fr going haywire, but there is also other particulates we cannot & don’t see that may be a danger to health.

Those blue, triple layer masks which hospital uses are specifically for that, as well as those super protective ones that blocks 99%. As for N95, I trusts only those fr 3M. If EVER I hv to resort to buy online, I wld be variety suspicious of variations. I’ve nvr hear of N95 in fabric combo. First time I’m hearing it & maybe I’ve been ignorant for the longest time since SARS days 🤷

Those colorful masks or those with designs are meant to block out dusts and big particles. Typically use by motorcyclists and cyclists (at least in HK and TW). It’s hopeless against virus and haze, but fantastic as a fashion statement (the nicer ones, that is). They are also great to prevent being mistaken as a mainland Chinese when you are in HK.

Surgical masks come in multi colors but always 3 layers. The colored layer (worn on the outside) repels liquid, the cloth inside layer captures liquid and stuff that you exhale while the middle does the filtration work.

That’s why it doesn’t matter what you wear if you are not the sick person. Just get a piece of fashion statement mask, serves no protection but you will look good at least.

                    From Wiki (but verified info):
A surgical mask, also known as a procedure mask, is intended to be worn by health professionals during surgery and during nursing to catch the bacteria shed in liquid droplets and aerosols from the wearer's mouth and nose. They are not designed to protect the wearer from inhaling airborne bacteria or virus particles and are less effective than respirators, such as N95 or NIOSH masks, which provide better protection due to their material, shape and tight seal.

Singaporeans are typically kiasu and kiasi. They don’t bother to understand or think what they are doing but as long as everyone is doing it, they want to chup ji ka, in case they lose out.

Esteema, Im also not sure if the fabric Xpure masks are effective, but based on my research back then, plus the science behind it, it makes effective sense to me. lol. Inside this fabric mask has a filter that filters out PM2.5, which to my knowledge is what the N95 does. But I could be wrong. https://www.xpure-tw.com/xpureinside.html

I did not bother to look for any surgical masks since the outbreak. I have also not worn mask myself since, only my kids. I think the situation is ok. I think the most impt thing is good hygiene and washing of hands, sanitiser usage when outside.
