WHO chief says widespread travel bans not needed to beat China virus

      https://sg.news.yahoo.com/chief-says-no-halt-travel-102149154.html

...no need for measures that \"unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade\" in trying to halt the spread of a coronavirus that has killed 361 people in China.

...\"We call on all countries to implement decisions that are evidence-based and consistent,\" Tedros told the WHO executive board, reiterating his message from last week when he declared an international emergency.

...China's delegate took the floor at the WHO Executive Board and denounced measures by \"some countries\" that have denied entry to people holding passports issued in Hubei province - at the center of the outbreak - and to deny visas and cancel flights.

...\"All these measures are seriously against recommendation by the WHO,\" said Li Song, who is China's ambassador for disarmament at the United Nations in Geneva.

During global shortage, it makes sense to prioritise healthcare workers and the vulnerable.
That is however different from saying that healthy individuals will not benefit from wearing a mask in this situation, especially when asymptomatic transmission is possible and there is enough information on the modes of transmission to know that masks offer one more layer of protection.
It would have been better to call a spade a spade, and tell the healthy majority to be extra vigilant in hygiene and practice social distancing where possible. But since it is not possible in the MRT trains and buses, I guess they decided to not open themselves up for barbs thrown their way when they travel in private cars.

I rmbr the US residents were upset abt airport scanners compromising the human anatomy to the naked eye. I’ve not seen the thermal scanners at the airports. Will only likely pass it next week when I fly. Anyone hv insights to share?
These are 2 different scanners, right?

The one that caused some news previously is the one where you go into a glass enclosure and raise your arms.
Takes about 3-5 secs. This is done at the inspection place where you put your hand-lugggage through the x-ray conveyor belt.

Thermal scanners are usually just the infra-red video cameras that scan the crowd as they move through a space or exit the aircraft. Someone will approach those who show an elevated temperature and do an actual thermometer check.

@ Zappy I’m trying to learn. Not particularly alarm, only proud SG was the first to innovate & use thermal scanners for SARS, but I’m not technically savvy type & trying to ustand why some scanners show up human anatomy particularly female’s. I don’t see it on TV whenever they show crowds passing airport scanners. The highlighted portion is usually face areas, or did I miss sth?

Oh… Since we were the first to use thermal scanners during SARS, we should strive to be the first to invent something for fast detection of Wuhan virus

Esteema, are you travelling to the US? Most intl airports in US had already replaced those 'naked' X-ray backscatter AIT systems with a less invasive type of scanner Millimeter Wave (MMW) which only shows the 'cartoon outline' of your body. The ones in Changi are also the 'cartoon' type.

Don’t like the idea some strange ppl stand in front of scanners to watch for human anatomy leh. Lol

DH mention a certain company using some scanners that strangely show up particularly female lingerie and its at the entrance gantry. The female staff very indignant & trying to protest to their HR. Hope it gets resolved soon.

Zeit, thank you for assurance that our authorities are not using strange scanners that do sth else fr it’s purpose of detecting health conditions.

In case you're still not aware, WHO is now known as CHO.
                        https://www.cfr.org/blog/tedros-taiwan-and-trump-what-they-tell-us-about-chinas-growing-clout-global-health

\"China’s top health official bragged that 2017 would bring a “bumper crop” for its global health engagement: in January, it signed a MOU with the WHO for cooperation on the One Belt, One Road initiative; in March, it opened the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute, a partnership with the Gates Foundation that focuses on early drug discovery to fight HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria; in April, it co-chaired the China-Africa Health Ministers Conference, committing itself to “multilateralism and a rules-based global health governance mechanism”; in May, President Xi Jinping hosted the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, during which he pledged 60 billion RMB ($8.8 billion) to developing countries and international organizations participating in the initiative to launch more projects to improve people’s well-being worldwide; in July, China will host the BRICS Health Ministers Conference; and in August, a high-level forum will be held in Beijing to discuss global health cooperation. With China’s rapid advancement in global health and U.S. retreat from this area, we will see a WHO increasingly looking toward China for leadership.
                        \"

Some Taiwanese netizens have joked that Tedros is XJP's health spokesperson.

Regarding \"some countries\", I'm pretty sure our guys have already 打招呼 before implementing those draconian measures at the checkpoints. All these advisories and heavyweight influencers asking you not to spread this or that, or no need to do this or that, have to do with our reliance on China trade to some extent. Our GDP growth last quarter was really bad. It's gonna get worse this half.
