One mummy friend forwarded me the above. She asked me why visit those on quarantine? Then might as well no need quarantine.

I am shocked by one of the minister’s responses on channel 8 interview just now. He said no need to wear mask as those on quarantine “aren’t sick and don’t look sick”. “By look”? He got super eyes that can detect the coronavirus?

DH said since the minister visited those students on quarantine, then as a socially responsible person, he should be LOA or quarantined too.

Very kind of him. It would have been better had he put on a mask. Regardless, most of the students did visit China. Low risk doesn’t mean no risk. If not, why LOA them?

Coronavirus are nothing new. Simple online research will tell you what they are. Every few years or so, a new strain emerges. Until SARS-CoV, medical researchers had not paid much attention to them because they were believed to cause only mild sickness like the common cold.

HCoV-HKU1 was first identified in Hong Kong in 2005. Subsequent research has shown that it is a similar strain to HCoV-NH, which has been discovered in samples dating back to 2001 from New Haven, USA. It causes acute respiratory conditions in young children. It is also regarded as endemic worldwide now and returns every winter. The US did not inform anybody back in 2002, when clinical virologists at Yale-New Haven Hospital identified HCov-NH. Now, it is all over the world. And westerners still prefer to refer to it as HCoV-HKU1 because, well... better Hong Kong than New Haven Connecticut, right?

Nobody locked down Saudi Arabia or the Middle East when MERS-CoV emerged. It has been traced as far back as 2012. Nobody even now dares to suggest suspension of the annual Haj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia until MERS-CoV is eradicated, and that is a (supposedly) much less contagious (and thus easier to control) strain with a very high mortality rate of 35%. Although the truth is nobody really knows because only those who present serious symptoms would have been tested for MERS-CoV in the Middle East.

It is actually a blessing that 2019-nCov originated (so it is believed) from Wuhan. Only China has the gumption to lock down an entire city of 11m. The Zhejiang Provincial government has since followed suit and locked down Wenzhou, another city of 9m, and Hangzhou and Taizhou (another 6m) because there are several hundred cases in the province.

I have no doubt that if (when) something similar happens again in Europe or the US, the strain will go worldwide (like HCov-NH), because it is inconceivable that Europe or the US will lock down a city like Paris or Chicago over a new 'common cold' strain with a fatality rate of 2%.

Do you seriously think that all these countries (including Singapore) would have been able to test and identify 2019-nCov patients so quickly if China had not released its DNA sequencing barely days after it was first identified? One only needs to look at what happened with MERS-CoV and HCoV-NH.

Here in Singapore, we won't even consider locking down the likes of Jurong West Streets 91/92 where there has been a large cluster of 20 dengue cases in the last 2 weeks alone, never mind Gangsa/Petir Roads or Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

So, enough with the sanctimonious nonsense. This will come back to bite us.

You have to acknowledge that with a fatality rate of 2%, 2019-nCov is the deadliest virus known to men. Never mind that 2% is about the same fatality as the “normal” influenza (for comparison, SARS 9.6%, MERS 34.4%). Due to paranoia-fever, people only believe in alternative facts or sensational news. You cannot provide them with factual information that doesn’t fit their current paranoia state of mind.

Btw, there are 1,730 dengue cases in Singapore reported for the first 5 weeks of this year. Small numbers and nothing compared to 24 cases reported for the Wuhan virus.
