In perspective, maybe we should consider the number of cases divided by total population?
That will actually make the situation looks more ridiculous than it is. 40+ out of 5.6m is ~0.0007%. If 0.0007% is already causing such mass hysteria and frenzy, can’t imagine what will the situation be like when / if we reached 0.01%. Probably have to shut down the entire country so that we can stay at home and make babies. Wuhan, by the way, has about 40,000 out of 11m or 0.4% of its population affected. Everyone else on the table is really WAY behind that number.

At the present moment, this coronavirus seems to be anything but deadly. Mortality rate remains low and about the same as the common flu. It may be highly contagious and like other highly contagious viruses eg chicken pox and HFMD, we should take the necessary precaution - maintain hygiene, keep clean, wash hands, see doctor and wear a mask when sick etc. Online soothsayers are making this virus sounds like the second coming of the plague when it is anything but.

When the dust settles, what this episode has shown is that our national response and messaging, despite years of producing propaganda for the government, still needs improvement. We haven’t been able to counter fake news, inaccurate info, or provide a reassuring message to stop the hysteria from spreading. Raising DORSCON to orange without ever explaining what those traffic light means isn’t helpful at all. The power of the aunties and uncles sharing “helpful” info, albeit fake, inaccurate or incomplete can’t be overlooked.

Last but not least, is it because it’s Chinese?

By the way, the topic should be renamed to Covid-19, which is the now official name of the 2019-nCov.

Coronavirus: WHO head warns ‘time is of the essence’ in limiting disease’s global spread.

\"The World Health Organisation warned Tuesday that the opportunity to limit the international spread of the coronavirus outbreak is fading, and that if the disease isn’t contained it could wreak global havoc.\"

To give this a bit more context, I believe his concern is more for countries with weak medical systems:
\"WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries to step up measures to detect and contain the virus, especially in at least 30 countries with weaker health systems, where it could 'create havoc'.\"

Our main concern should be to stop the virus from spreading from us to countries where they are less able to handle an outbreak. I sense that much of the anxiety here seems to be from fear of catching the virus ourselves. In Singapore, with our fairly strict measures and good medical care, based on the statistics we have available, other than the elderly and those with chronic underlying health issues, I don't think we ourselves need be so fearful.

Do we have the highest number of people infected by nCoV outside China? No wonder some countries already started issuing travel advisory against visiting Singapore.

There are areas of improvement, in the way this has been handled by the govt. That said, sg govt has handled better than other nations around. And the reason for high numbers , well this article kind of sounds logical to me. Singapore is aggressively finding out every person here who could be finding out, and is being pretty transparent about it.

It is also a warning to the when world, not necessarily at countries with weaker health system.

\"A virus can have more powerful consequences than any terrorist action. If the world doesn't want to wake up and consider this enemy virus as Public Enemy number 1, I don't think we will learn from our lessons,\" he said.

Coincidentally he works at Certis Cisco Centre in Paya Lebar. The Life church which infected 5 others, is also situated in Paya Lebar. “Lockdown” Paya Lebar? Just joking.
Extend to Geylang too? Since it is now a cluster according to the post above.
