COVID-19 belongs to betacoronavirus, same sub-family as SARS whereas H1N1 belongs to alphainfluenzavirus sub-family. The symptoms sensitivity, incubation, case fatality, etc are all different.

Don't know why a 4G minister says its more similar to H1N1?
He’s not referring to the virus itself, nor its scientific classification.

I agree it’s more similar to H1N1 because the symptoms are very mild and majority of the cases in SG have recovered. Only the elderly or those with other health complications are still in ICU. Even the 2-year-old has recovered and been discharged.

SG’s ICU system right now is able to cope. All those deaths you read about in China are probably due to their healthcare system being extremely heavily overloaded. They have to queue hours in the cold just to get into the hospital. So the deaths are not because the virus is particularly fatal like SARS. It’s not.

But any Article fr estab research scientist

Concluded this is less fatal than SARS?
We just know that it is far more contagious
China also did not reveal why people die ? Is it Bad virus issues or burdened medical facilities that can’t cope to help the sick ?

          WHO good enough for you?
“As with other respiratory illnesses, infection with 2019-nCoV can cause mild symptoms including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. It can be more severe for some persons and can lead to pneumonia or breathing difficulties. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. Older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as, diabetes and heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.”

Fatality rate estimated at less than 2% (while SARS about 30%). Death mainly due to infection, pneumonia and complications arising from Pre-existing conditions. China has been releasing infection / deaths update to WHO regularly (same as SG).

            @ zac’s Mum

How’s the 6-mth old baby doing? He’s out of hospital? Hope he’s well & family or relatives can care for him. 🙏

Think it’s tough for China with such large numbers mainly focused in Hubei, Wuhan. Not only it drains physical/medical resources, the medical caregivers are also stretched & drain incl emotional wear out when they can’t be with their families for weeks going months.

Their current weather is also not conducive for recuperation. Cold weather is also not so good for the lungs.

Even for common cold, sinus, bad throat days, we tend to feel worse in an air-conditioned environment vs a well-ventilated, room temperature even.

Skym , floppy , thks for the link n read .
Yes of course we trust WHO ,always hear fr daily news abt covid being mild compared to SARs, WHO initially also sort of “ underestimated “ the rate of it being that contagious n thought no raise of alarm
Generally the elders n people with existing medical conditions will b in danger as we all know .
Btw, anyone know the profile of patients in ICU here . Yrs ago, I had a relative who passed on due to a flu virus / lungs infection n this relative does not have pre existing Medical conditions ( age of 40s) .. really never underestimate a Flu pandemic .

Am I being naive to think that the covid-19 is not that fatal despite being contagious?

Wet weather & air-conditioned are poor environment for one with flu. The feeling is awlful with blockages thro entire nasal (can’t beeathe well, can’t hear well & eyes watery & causes lethargy. With pre-existing conditions particularly those with heart condition will find it difficult to push more energy to breathe easily. Elderly hv to be extra careful.
