I m delaying my shopping trip.. my trip usually depends on milk in stock..last trip bought 4 cartons milk maybe can dong till tomorrow..
Hi dear, we have switched to UHT milk. Each unopened packet can last for more than 6 months at room temperature if unopened. See the expiry date is 2021, long long time away.

      Once opened, then refrigerate.

Like this don’t need to keep running to supermarket to buy fresh milk, which expires after 1 week?

        Slmkhoo

The trip to supermarket is mainly for fresh veg. Am getting mainly cabbage, Wong Bak which can last longer.
Before the covid, I could go to supermarket once in 2 wks; now is almost weekly.

            Be careful

How can milk last so long, even if not been opened ?

            What is it,
that is inside the milk, that can sustain so long, for 6 months!

They must have added in some preservative.
Check what chemical they added, on the milk bottle label

Fresh milk once open hv to be consumed within a few days.

I always get the milk with the furthest expiry date available on the shelves.

Like zac’s mum, I have many Farmhouse UHT milk packets in a few flavours too. I got them in case they suddenly decide to introduce further restrictions. UHT tastes as good as fresh milk when chilled. But since there are no new restrictions yet, I’m still buying 2 litre fresh milk from the provision shop near my place.

Like starlight, I also store wongbok and beijing cabbage as they are lasting. Northern Chinese, Koreans and Russians store and preserve cabbage/ wongbok to last them the entire winter. During severe famines during the wars and post-war rationing season, cabbage was always the No. 1 veggie to stockpile in Chinese homes. Cabbage can be fried with bee hoon, used in lontong, coleslaw, cabbage meat dumplings, soups or just stirfried on its own.

I also keep dried shiitake mushroom which can last for a year. They can be braised with dried scallop, Ipoh hor fun or used in fungi pasta.

Other hardy veggies I buy are carrots, radish, broccoli, non-prewashed potatoes, small red onions and shallots, celery and tri-colour capsicums. I also discovered eggplant and bittergourd can last 1 week + in my chiller.

Hi dear, it is absolutely safe and scientific.

UHT stands for Ultra High Treated milk. The milk is sterilized by using the scientific process of pasteurization that we learnt about in secondary school.

Link to Wikipedia about UHT process: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-high-temperature_processing

UHT milk is the same milk that many of us know as “packet milk”, used to be packaged as pyramid-shaped during our childhood, now it comes in either toddler size, small size like individual packet Milo size, or bigger 1L size for family use.

                      No chemical preservatives are used.
