Tuition centers should not force parents to accept digital learning at full fees.

Some tuition centres claimed that they still need to pay rent to landlord so they still need to charge parents at 100% for e-tutoring. No discount at all. This is ridiculous.
Mandated to pass rebates from landlords to tenants already. No more excuses.

Hi,

Anyone with similar experience to share on Stalford Learning Ctr? They do not offer discount/rebates. They've combined 2 x P6 classes (~ 60 students) and conduct the lessons (~2 hrs) online via Zoom.

The centre is chasing us for May payment.

https://www.stalford.edu.sg/
Did they say why they combined the 2 classes? Was it because one tutor quit? ~60 students in a Zoom class is NOT conducive at all. If u notice in Zoom, if the hosts displays their computer screen to show PowerPoint or tablet scribblings, then effectively the tutor can only see max 4-5 kids’ faces at a time? Cannot see the rest of the class, how to gauge their attention? In Zoom, basically if the participant does not “talk” at all, the face of the participant is not even visible at the front screen of the host or any other participant.
No teacher quit. They combined 2 centres, Waterway point & Tiong Bahru Plaza for Zoom. Initially, 60 over students but reduce to about 30 now per zoom session.

You are absolutely right. We're ok with the teacher though but just felt the centre could have done more to help parents.

They should not combine because it's not fair to the customer. The tutor was hired by Stalford to conduct 2 X 30-pupil class, and the paying consumers understood at point of transaction that attention on their child will be split among 30 pupils, not 60 pupils.

So by hook or by crook, this tutor must provide 2 X services. Indeed, it is tiring to host 2 runs on Zoom (using digital pen/toggle back and forth worksheet and replying to msgs), but you know what, that's what other tuition centres have been doing, including hosting back-to-back 2-hr Zoom sessions the entire Saturday or Sunday, with each session having its own secured unique Meeting ID and password.

Ethical tuition centres do not provide a playback of recording of the earliest class of that day/week, but their tutors must duly repeat the same contents and reteach real-time for the number of times she/he's been hired for.

Ideally, there must be a video clip to be shared with parents post-class, so that they know it is not an audio recording, but an actual live one with their child asking questions/tutor answering questions in that Zoom or whatever platform video recording.

You've been shortchanged by Stalford.

Then what's your beef? It's already back to 30 pupils which was what you paid for, right? :scratchhead:

Maybe, just maybe....he paid for 4x full price sessions in April and had to attend 60-student class for say, 1 session. And now that he is being asked to pay for May, he was expecting some kind of back-dated credit?

Or just letting off steam.

Actually if 60 is now back to 30, it could be the “starhub day” that the tutor was not able to connect. So it was just a one-off isolated case? Or it could be the WWP teacher was “kit up” for online class but the TBP one was not “kit up” yet and had not received the center issued laptop in the first few days of April.

So many possibilities. And now that it is back to 30, I would say that there is no reason to pull them up like that with a link to their website.

Some inconsistencies :siam:

What tutors would usually do for big classes is just present a one-way lecture. And then allocate 5 minutes for Q&A (if they even bother). If that’s what’s happening to your P6 class then not much difference from watching video right.

Depends on what you expect to get out of the P6 lessons. It’s quite hard to switch to another centre at this “late” stage so close to PSLE. But if your money hasn’t been worth it for the online lessons then why continue.
What tuition subject is this, at Stalford Learning Ctr, that got 60 students combined attend online ?
is it a primary school or secondary school subject ?

It's truly quite tough for everyone now, parents and tutors alike. Students don't have it easy too, as they have to cope with staring at the screen for loooong hours...

My beef is \"Tuition centers should not force parents to accept digital learning at full fees.\"

Gov already stepped in, helped subsidise their manpower costs, mandate landlords to pass rebates to tenants. Like i said, they could have done more to help parents with some rebates/discounts when they moved classes online, yet collect full fees. From the experience, their digital learning method need more improvement.
