Tuition centers should not force parents to accept digital learning at full fees.

      Hi,

Anyone with similar experience to share on Stalford Learning Ctr? They do not offer discount/rebates. They've combined 2 x P6 classes (~ 60 students) and conduct the lessons (~2 hrs) online via Zoom.

The centre is chasing us for May payment.

      https://www.stalford.edu.sg/
Did they say why they combined the 2 classes? Was it because one tutor quit?

~60 students in a Zoom class is NOT conducive at all. If u notice in Zoom, if the hosts displays their computer screen to show PowerPoint or tablet scribblings, then effectively the tutor can only see max 4-5 kids’ faces at a time? Cannot see the rest of the class, how to gauge their attention? In Zoom, basically if the participant does not “talk” at all, the face of the participant is not even visible at the front screen of the host or any other participant.

What tutors would usually do for big classes is just present a one-way lecture. And then allocate 5 minutes for Q&A (if they even bother). If that’s what’s happening to your P6 class then not much difference from watching video right.

Depends on what you expect to get out of the P6 lessons. It’s quite hard to switch to another centre at this “late” stage so close to PSLE. But if your money hasn’t been worth it for the online lessons then why continue.
What tuition subject is this, at Stalford Learning Ctr, that got 60 students combined attend online ?
is it a primary school or secondary school subject ?

It's truly quite tough for everyone now, parents and tutors alike. Students don't have it easy too, as they have to cope with staring at the screen for loooong hours...

For those looking for alternative learning resources, my team and I have created a not-for-profit website for O-Level Chemistry: https://chemnotcheem.com/. It is intuitive to navigate, as notes and exam questions are sorted by topics. It's also mobile friendly!

Hope this help your child's independent learning. Take care everyone and enjoy the May holidays!

No teacher quit. They combined 2 centres, Waterway point & Tiong Bahru Plaza for Zoom. Initially, 60 over students but reduce to about 30 now per zoom session.

You are absolutely right. We're ok with the teacher though but just felt the centre could have done more to help parents.

Then what's your beef? It's already back to 30 pupils which was what you paid for, right? :scratchhead:

My beef is \"Tuition centers should not force parents to accept digital learning at full fees.\"

Gov already stepped in, helped subsidise their manpower costs, mandate landlords to pass rebates to tenants. Like i said, they could have done more to help parents with some rebates/discounts when they moved classes online, yet collect full fees. From the experience, their digital learning method need more improvement.

Thank you so much for initiating learning resources for free. A lot can really make use of this especially with the current HBL and limited financial income. It helps to know there are websites like this which offers Chemistry help for free. especially that there are certain topics which we cannot help our kids. Kudos!

UOL extends rental rebates for retail tenants to July, with over $50m Covid-19 relief package

                  https://www.straitstimes.com/business/property/uol-extends-rental-rebates-for-retail-tenants-to-july-with-over-50m-covid-19?xtor=CS3-18&utm_source=STiPhone&utm_medium=share&utm_term=2020-05-04%2020%3A05%3A12

Noteworthy that UOL malls include United Square.

If your child’s tuition centre is a tenant of United Square, no excuse not to extend you discounted fees during this shutdown period.

If your kids are at higher grade for piano, they can download popular songs or simpler music scores to play for fun. Sight-reading for them should be manageable, especially if they come with audio clip demo for them to listen to.

Or they can play duets to make things more interesting.

Personally I would let my kid use the music instrument playtime as an outlet for de-stressing during this shut-in period. He doesn’t really need external push regarding violin. We listen to other players on YouTube for leisure too.
any platforms that u use to get the scores? mine resorted to those piano keys on youtube, which i'm not too fond of.. end up learning to play the song but the 'wrong' way.

our music teacher also requested to do e-lessons.. place the screen facing the keys but i wonder how to fully view the fingering etc? when it came to theory, also alot of taking photos n sending on the spot. waste alot of time there trying to figure out how to coach the child on the topic. if have to take down notes on book, child also writes himself so time spent there coz sometimes abit lost..

is it just my kids or are more facing the same issue of their kids putting in sooo many hours in front of the laptop? Mine will glue to the laptop, on SLS, koobits from 7am+ till evening… i said to stop but they said still have work to complete… so far no teachers called to complain work undone etc… but i worry the load n time taken is too slow… like double sch hours. some schs like mine, had no live lessons n teachers recorded everything… only checking on the class once a week… wow v brave of the teacher i think…

honestly, if the platform can work as well, then what are teachers for? I’m sure children who can understand the topics themselves won’t have an issue… but if unable to cope or understand, it’s then a lot of self learning during HBL…

No, unless you have no other choice. Is your child taking exam soon? Thats why she cannot defer?

Yeah was intending to take exams this year... though with the cancellation of the upcoming July tests also donno whether it'll happen

Is it Abrsm? I called ABRSM sg on the cancellation of theory exam. They give a few options. You can call to clarify w them

                        1. Full refund now
                        2. Full refund later if replacement date is not suitable for the child
                        3. Top up for a higher grade to be taken later.

                        Pls verify with them directly.

Now, the next thing is to find a teacher to continue lessons if your child is still taking exam. Is the tr good? Not near your house?
on ABRSM postponement.. what if the child is taking exams this yr n the pcs are up till 2020? any info on the pcs being extended into 2021? I assume the following pcs from will all have to be postponed too?
