Local medical schools have good budgets for more cutting edge teachings, embrace new technologies and budget for research. UK schools are poor now with Brexit and especially with falling international student enrolments.
Thank you all for sharing. I was under the impression that our local medical schools are prestigious, well sought after, and of course more affordable. It's been interesting hearing your views and i will certainly bring the points up when discussing the choices with my dd.
My son who is doing his 2nd yr law in UK did insist on going despite having offers here.
Local medical schools students study local diseases, learn our local hospital systems since year 3, learn to communicate with the aunties, uncles who are in our community, good networks of fellow doctors to support each other when they graduate (very important factor to consider).
Some Univ are also ranked based on the number of science journal papers they have published and they do not necessarily reflect the quality of their teachings.
Medicine are vocational jobs unlike studying Economics etc. Fees for our local med school students are heavily subsidized by our government. Government will ensure the doctors trained in YLL & LKC are able to support our healthcare sectors in the future. Training is rigourous and demanding regardless of whether they are in in YLL or LKC.
When they work in the hospitals, they are judged by how good they are in their work. Not whether they are from oxbridge or YLL/LKC. In fact, if they graduate from oxbridge, people expect them to be outstanding.
Many specialist doctors that I know keep their own kids in the local medical schools despite getting top uk med sch offers. Those without local medical school offers have no choice but to study overseas. I am sure they understand the system well.
Anyway the decision is very personal to each student and their family. There are pros and cons in studying locally versus overseas. -
You are so right, proudmum.

My son has been offered his 2nd choice to study Science at NUS Faculty of Science. He was being notified by email of the offering a few weeks after his NUS Medicine MMI interviews. Obviously don’t think he is on the wait list with this notification.
As for NTU medicine, he was placed on wait list. For the time being he was invited for a double major programme interview at NTU School of Biological Sciences. This particular course has a tie-up with NTU-Duke-NUS medicine pathway. It will lead to a medical degree as Doctor of Medicine (MD) after a total of 8 years of studying.
I see it is an up hill task for such aspiration, a big hurdle after another. He has to go for interviews at NTU then again at Duke NUS and sit for MCAT exams. Again at the end only the best results would be selected to go for the degree in medicine (4 yrs) after completing the Science Courses (4 yrs).
Hope chasing the moon brings the passion nearer and don’t ended up like chasing the wind after all the hassles. -

Oh this is the direct NTU-Duke-Nus pathway course. My child's friend is offered too. Hers is SUTD-DUKE-NUS.

All the best!! I think she got the 7 years offer right away. No need to wait for completion of SUTD to apply to DUKE-NUS. -

hi, all the best to your boy. May his NTU waitlist be converted to offer ASAP.

In the meantime, just try his best for NTU and Duke NUS interview.
Jia you ! Medicine is not an easy path. Hats off to these kids who choose this path. -
Thank you "Taz" & "proud mum" for the consolation.
It’s a long wait plus the anxiety. I will let my son decide and hope he won’t be stressed and exhausted juggling between army training and going for nerve-wracking interviews and entrance test.
As parent, I can see it is very tiring and I can only provide moral support and encouragement. -
U are an A* daddy!!!

You son has another shot next year!
Education is a marathon. Continue to hand out drinks and towel as he runs this race! -
Any offers from YLL yet?
