Tamarind, I agree with you about the P&J books. I have a few and my four-year-old is able to read most of the words, even though we don’t read those books every night. I think it’s also a combination of him and his kindy’s reading curriculum. Reinforcement really helps.


But, ultimately, no matter how patient I try to be with him, he plays the fool and will pretend not to words he read effortlessly just a few seconds ago. Then I stop. No point continuing. Try again another day.

My boy did the same thing too when he was four years old I also just moved on.

Suitable for kids 2 to 5 years old who are beginning to learn the alphabet. The best thing is that kids can also learn some simple Spanish, German, and French from this website.

For those who do not already know, the starfall.com is an excellent website for learning phonics and reading :

It is possible for kids to learn all the 26 phonics letter sounds only by learning from http://www.starfall.com

Need your advise. My boy knows how to decode the phonics sound and also knows how to do blending for the sight words.

But he has some difficulty in remembering the High Frequency Words especially when they can't be decodeable.

Now how can I help my boy in this aspect? :scratchhead:

Peter and Jane are the best books for teaching high frequency words. Please read my blog :

Any word that can be read by breaking up into phonics sounds are phonetic words. Any words, including high frequency words that cannot be read by phonics are sight words. It is very important to teach both phonics and sight words at the same time. Read my blog for more information.

Phonics is important for spelling but will not help a child to read fluently. The Peter and Jane books will enable kids to read very fluently.

Another parent asked me how do we know whether a word is a sight word ?

Here is the list of 9000+ phonetic words :

Any word that is not in the list are sight words

Note that it is not necessary to teach a child every word in the phonetic list. It is more important to let the child learn by reading story books regularly, then kids will also learn grammar and vocabulary.
