Showed the videos of RV to my child. Child asked, is RV a Chinese school?

Haha... how did you answer?

Shld not be. I would thought that sch shld not be too different from the neighbourhood pri sch she is at now. Knowing that there is no Chinese sch in sg now. But is it a Chinese school? Teachers use Chinese mostly?

Not been to RV but we hv visited another sap sch and the kids communicated in English quite well. Why do kids in RV chose it? Proximity and friends?
Depends on what you mean by Chinese school? Yes, the school does promote Chinese culture and learning... after all, it's a SAP school! Their school song is in Chinese and if the form teacher happens to be a Chinese teacher, he/she will also conduct CCE lessons in Mandarin. Other than that, I'd say the students speak pretty much both English and Mandarin, like any typical Chinese S'porean? 😂

Prob a range of reasons why kids choose RV. Proximity is one factor, being one of the few SIA (SAP, IP, Autonomous) schools in the west. Those from SAP primary schools will prob find the culture similar to their primary schools. Or some could like the unique programmes offered by RV like Y.LEAD. I hear some are also attracted to the 歌谣 songwriting culture in RV too.

What does your child prefer?

Of course depending on child’s result, I am just exploring. Will be happy if her results are good enough for the other sap sch in the west which offers o level prog, since she is not the most hard working student. But kids surrounding child are talking about ip schs, child may alr have her own idea. So no choice, I have to prepare a bit.

I find kids in schs with longer Chinese based history are more grounded. vs kids in branded schs can be snorbish?

Comparing with other nearer ip schs which require 1hr travelling time vs a fraction. This mum is more pragmatic.

Child replied, "but English is my forte"
But seriously, there is no such thing as English sch in sg too.

Would you mind to share? Are sch admin matters all conveyed in Chinese print? This mummy finds it hard if letters or notifications are all in Chinese.
Are sch announcements in Chinese? child may struggle with that.

Hi 6thisnthat9, school announcements and circulars are still in English, not to worry! 😂

Hi I am taking PSLE this year and don't know which school is better - River Valley High or Crescent Girls' School.
Pros of CGS- Heard that the students there are well-behaved and teachers are strict but dedicated. They have been doing quite well in their O-levels for the past few years. I also prefer girl schools.
Cons pf CGS- Just the distance. It takes about 45min for me to reach there by train and 20min by car. My younger brother is also in Lower Primary, parents are working too, so it is very inconvienient for us. Parents also don't encourge me to go to CGS because of the long distance.

Pros of RV- The distance is about 3 times shorter than CGS.
Cons- Parents not really happy with students' results these few years, a lot of good teachers leaving the school too due to stress and standard has dropped. It is also a CO-ed school but I prefer girls' schools.

Overall, I am looking for a school that has good academic results and behaviour, along with good teachers and a condusive environment. I do not care a lot for CCAs and I hope that someone will be able to help me out. 🕺
Sorry, but other than distance, RV does not fit your requirement of being a girls school, and also being so called results dropped and teachers leaving (not agree with this). Most importantly, seemed your heart already at CGS, then you should overcome the distance (the only con) and go for it. My younger girl wakes up 5am every morning, and 90 min back to home daily for a school like 2nd home.

inference and corroboration kind of qns. Example she said the locals are helpful as they send $ back to china to help their families n relatives.

She got marked wrong. Ans should be they are concern abt their families in china.
how to know what’s the rite word to use?

I asked my kid, it was about the most appropriate word, context and structure of the sentence. Let the child be more exposed to neutral news channels like BBC and lots reading. Download past History papers from the RV portal should help too.

How do you get the access to RV portal? My child doesn't tell me anything 🤷
