every year, NUSH gave COs to around how many candidates ?


offer to 170+ applicants, or to 400 ?

Since this year do away with ( Round 1 test / Science camp test),

out of more than several hundreds of DSA applications who applied, NUSH will definitely screen & interview more than 170+ short-listed applicants, in case after interview, find that some of them are not suitable.

From the Q&A sessions, principals shared for previous years - 2000+ apply to sit for the 1st selection tests then 400+ are invited to camp. Thereafter, CO and WLs are given out for 170 places. They did not mention how many COs or WLs =>some posts in this forum Claim 150 COs and 20 WLs. If not all taken up, the extra places go to SIE phase.


This CoVid year, the school has no selection test or camp so will look through all applicants then screen for 400+ to interview. I suppose they will make the COs and WLs then.

I wonder how many will apply ... there would be an increased awareness and more detailed information to parents this year. Outreach efforts were limited to only pri school visits the school did and one Open House day previously.
However, it has to be listed as one of the 3 DSA choices so some may not want to forgo one out of 3 chances given that there is no pre-selection test as assessment baseline. Some risk averse parents will not want to waste a slot if they think there is even a small possibility that their child may not make to the list of 400-odd screened for interview.

There were a lot of kids who do not have a specific portfolio (except CCA participation). For them, NUSH & SST were ideal choices, as they do not want to lose an opportunity. So, sure NUSH & SST would have received more applications (same as 2000+). They could easily shortlist 500+ students if they shortlist based on A* in Math/Science and olympiad certificates. There are many kids who excel in math & science in every school, easily scoring A*.

Hi parents! I think you might want to hear my nephew's experience...he DSA into NUS High and HCI last year! He has gotten gold in every Math and Science Olympiad in participated in...always got 95-99 (occasionally 100) in both Math and Science. He was in Catholic High (Primary), he was also in GEP for Math. He participated in many more Math and Science competitions and won a lot of awards. He got a CO from both HCI and NUS High. His Mom wanted him to go to HCI because of the IP and brand name and of course the strong culture and the well rounded education and the alumni, while the son wanted to go to NUS High because of the high emphasis on Math and Science. Finally, the mother gave in to the son, and accepted the NUS High CO, he is now Sec 1 and he is really enjoying his time there. I hope his experience help you even though the process is going to be different this year😅

Any tips of preparing for interviews (if shortlisted ;))? What type of questions do they ask in Interview (other than some general questions like why NUSH etc.,?). What type of targetted questions in math/science?

: In terms of tips, don't prepare yourself too much, but it is good if you practice a few questions just to be mentally prepared. Some of the questions they asked me was, \"What is the math theory that interests you the most\", \"What changes would you like to see to the Science curriculum?\", \"As we can see that your Math and Science results are exceptionally impressive, does that mean that you put all your effort in Math and Science and leave your other core and non-core subjects haywire?\" \"How would you use the Math and Sciences to change how people live, give 4 examples\". These are the few questions that I can remember. But in my view, only if you have a lot passion, and by a lot it has to be a exceptional amount, then only you will get a CO or WL because in the interview the interviewers can see how much passion you have for the subjects, and if that amount of passion will be enough for you to enjoy the accelerated programme. Lastly, be yourself, if the interviewers feel your personality will really fit the school, they will call you in if not they will reject you and just know that it is because they know that the programme is not suitable for you! Good luck and don't give up! 😜

The format is very different this year so previous experience may not be indicative of what the school mgt will plan for this year. However, what they are looking out for will be the same i.e. passion, academic competence, critical thinking etc

It’s a very unique and child-centered school. Son had offers to RI and NUSH. He wanted NUSH since he was in P3/4.
Parents each from Raffles and HC - we did paint him the pros and cons as we are active alumni given children of our closest childhood friends are in these schools too. Boy decided for himself.
He is happy, made a lot of like-minded friends and loves the school community.
We are very grateful that this is the most suitable pathway for him.
