What drives parents to register at Catholic High Primary despite their 240 affiliate COP for O level programme?

The bulk (80%) of the applicants are either alumni or siblings of current/former students. Based on family background, if the grandfather, father and elder brothers grew up in the typical Cat High Chinese-speaking family, SAP + studious environment in school, the younger boys will also benefit from the full cultural immersion and score well in HCL and (Usually) Math & Science. This group is quite confident of meeting the 240 COP easily.

The remaining group (20%) are either Catholics living within 1km (2B) or public living within 1km (2C). This group has almost no other alternative primary school within 1km anyway (except maybe Ai Tong), so where else can they apply to? The proximity to home is already a big draw, so they probably wouldn’t choose a further Catholic school like St Gabriel’s or a further neighborhood school like Guangyang.

PLMGS last year score was 205 for affiliates and 237 for non-affiliates. COP has come down a little after 80/20 rule implemented.

You don’t hear much of them because PLMGS (Secondary) isn’t a 250 school. It’s COP is artificially high because they have very little, at times none, places for non-affiliates in the past. They are not better, or worst, than several of the CHIJ schools (which you probably don’t hear much about either).

One might ask what is the point of being a 250 school since the better students can always find their way there. 250 schools are IP and are open to all based on merit, affiliation doesn't count. Does the O level programme in an IP school drive parents to pick P1 schools? Just asking.

        depend on individual,

because some students who scored 250 & above, may not choose IP program, prefer to stick back to the traditional O-level curriculum instead.

Not all students who scored 250 & above, keen to quickly jump into the \"IP\" band wagon, because IP may not suit these students. They know what they are good at, or not good at.

        Example

Let's look at 2019 PSLE batch, SCGS primary school Affliated students, who went back to SCGS Secondary

        look under the column, \"Affliation\"

There are student(s) with Tscore 253, inside O-level track.

What is SCGS COP admission , into IP programme ? 252

Do these students, qualify for SCGS IP ?
        Yes, they do,
because their 253 exceeded 252 (IP) SCGS Cut off point admission.

Then, why they didn't opt for IP ?

        Possible reasons

        1) they don't like IP, prefer O-level curriculum, because O-level track suits them better,

        or

        2) they prefer to choose their own A-level Junior College after finished their O-level, instead.

        https://sis.moe.gov.sg/SchoolDetails.aspx?schoolCode=7014

After O level, if they want to go Eunoia Junior College, they still can, as long as their L1R5 enable them to.

But, if they not going EJC, prefer to go somewhere else, also can[/quote]But this doesn't really matter, one may argue, when choosing a primary school with affiliation to a 250 IP school, since affiliation doesn't matter if the child does well. If he doesn't do well for PSLE, is affiliation to get into a O level programme in that school important for P1 parents? I guess I might also answer this question as for some parents, it does matter for reasons such as faith and proximity to home etc. But it really begs to question the rationale behind the effort to get into a Primary school with affiliation to a 250 secondary school, if there are no existing ties, or practical reasons.

CHS's and NYPS>NYGH's affiliation scores are so high, its almost like no affiliation!
And I noticed PLMGS has a -44 discount between affiliated and non affiliated, seems like a very good choice of safety net. 250 for non affiliates, wow! However i've never really paid attention to them, seems like a dark horse and underrated. Never heard people mention them enough.

Thanks for your input! What about St Marg and Fairfeild Methodist? Where do they stand among what tier or reputation they are? St Marg is the oldest school in SG with such illustrious past but why so underrated? Both St Marg and Fairfield Methodist secondary COP are around 240, its not easy to get in!

SMSS and FMSS take in students from the affiliated primary school at a much discounted COP. So the number of available seats open to students from non affiliated schools is small. However, CGS COP indicates the lowest entry point into the school. In other words, every student in CGS scored at least 240+.

Some schools have really weird odd numbers. More schools than in previous years.

Did anyone find the answer as to WHY???
