I thin he is leaning towards NTU for these reasons… not too sure but some fair points.

          1) NTU has BMAT filter - thus people who are going NTU could be said to already have a desire for Medicine way before and thus took the trouble to apply and study and sit for BMAT though it was so close to A Levels. Because of that, the students there could generally speaking, be more driven. This does not mean NUS students are not driven, most definitely are! But can’t deny the fact there can also be sizeable portion of students who just got 90 UAP and decided to give Medicine a shot and luckily got in - so the drive / passion may not be the same. Of course like what I said, not to generalise the student populations, but there is truth in DS words too i guess…

          2) He is definitely more vocal kind i feel… feel tbl will fit him better and also bc he likes to debble in non academic areas maybe ntu can give him more freedom to mix and match his schedule. versus nus very lecture heavy. (Heard 8 to 4 on many days), thus may not have the flexibility of schedule to do what he likes outside

worried that he is not self-disciplined to study prior to tbl lessons though… if never study beforehand no point go tbl sessions also… but at same time he wished there was a mix of both schools of lectures and tbl but theres no ideal option either…

he is very interested about the holistic experience, ie school life, cip opportunties, bonding school events aside from acads… anybody have opinions on this to share? maybe can like a side by side comparision between nus and ntu on such things outside of academic approach…

            Hi there,

Congrats on your child offer. You may check out the past posts on the comparison of NUS and NTU. Based on words of mouth of the school life. It depends on the personality character.Ms for your child. For instance, my child enjoys the hall life in NUS and the hall life exceeded their expectations yearly among their peers. A range of wide activities in the hall for activities that was plan by their management team of students to allow students to have a vibrant life.

NUS also has a wide range of course activities that allows students to choose from and take part in the programme which allows them to excel in their potential. In regards to the timetable, it can be lecture based for the day but if your child can managed well in both academic and personal activities, there is no reason that whichever meds school that he chooses affects his personal activities thereafter.

Personally, I feel that depends on your child personality and characters, if he prefers team based learning approach and wants to get exposure of clinical attachment in later years, while still wishes to enjoy school and hall life in university, NUS would be the choice for him. But, if he inclines for tbl approach wants to experience at the environment of medical field attachment early, then NTU.

In view of the timeline for this to make a decision, make the best out of it and all the best. My friend’s daughter till date still not hear anything. She is getting anxiety and restless nights. As parent, I do worry about her mental and physical health.

Please note all of NUS halls have no aircon and they do not allow portable aircon in the room. NTU medical halls are like condo with both aircon and non aircon. FYI

                Hello Ngfamrox,

My daughter spoke to many of her friends and seniors about the differences between YLL and LKC and shared with me. Will share here, hope it is helpful.

With regards to the holistic school life, YLL cohort is almost twice the size of LKC. My dd feels that this results in a more vibrant school culture because there are more people. For CIP opportunities and bonding events, both LKC and YLL have many good opportunities available for students.

With regards to the worry about YLL being lecture heavy and no TBL, I heard from my dd that her seniors mentioned they often have Collaborative Learning Classes which can be similar to TBL in the sense that it allows for discussion and insightful input from experts.

TBL may be a bit difficult for students as it requires higher level of discipline to prepare beforehand compared to YLL lecture format. If student has no time to prepare beforehand due to other commitments, the TBL session may not be so useful. However, YLL students can watch the recorded lecture at a later time and at their own pace. If your child is very disciplined I think TBL would be very good for him. LKC has more “free” time, no official scheduled lessons but my dd’s LKC seniors mentioned a lot of the time is spent to study and prepare. Requires more discipline.

Overall YLL and LKC are very good schools, holistic experience is largely similar too. Main difference is in teaching style (NUS established over many years of training local doctors, compared to NTU’s influence from a top school in the UK) and student culture. My dd mentioned that if she had to choose between YLL and LKC, she thinks YLL is overall slightly better. She likes the vibrant culture and strong support system from seniors.

There are a lot of resources online and introduction to TBL. If you don't read the materials, you don't go to class. Flip class room is a very common pedagogy and part of TBL.
