Thank you.
Based on past few years’ experience, Year 1 at ACSI is adjustment year & honeymoon year.Cocovan\" post_id=\"1994548\" time=\"1599643923\" user_id=\"185581:
Hi ,
Can i check, for sec 1, ib program, students will mix with o level track students in certain subjects or they will have their own main class?
Are the boys usually hook on phone or so in the sch compound?
Is sec 1 ib workload ok?
Thanks in advance
IB hv their own curriculum, not mixed with students fr Express classes.
Just rmbr to set aside June sch holidays for their project team meetings. Guess next year might still be a lot less difficult to juggle time with vaccine for covid still inconclusive so travel will not be in the way nor project team may be on Microsoft meets or zoom & the like.
As to whether the boys are hooked on hp, will depend on each individual’s self discipline.
What I find useful is to sign up as many enrichment lessons as possible to engage their time constructively. My child had the option to do 3rd language & it literally cuts him off fr unproductive chats or “game discussion groups”. Overtime, things got focussed towards classroom discussion, CCAs Grpchat & teacher-students class/subj chats.
At Secondary level, we can’t restrict these young fellows to learn to manage their own time, and they’ll need that community learning space.
The school hv a policy of hp usage only after classes & they’re expected to put Ho in Their own lockers.
Hope abv helps
My boy I think he has no time to do others things as he is in competitive sport. So training at least 3 to 4x per week. But his computer skill is not that advance. So not sure this will cause him slower in catching up in the lesson? -
The school provides a lot of support academically (in fact, way too much by way of notes etc). However, the main problem is indeed time management, and boys will be boys. So Estéema’s advice about keeping them busy is unfortunately very applicable—the thing is to keep them usefully busy.
Tuition is not normally necessary unless they have really been wasting time, or if they have excessive CCA. Some situations that may arise are CCA straddling (e.g. swimmers playing water-polo, athletes who end up playing rugby), KIV-ing work until they cannot catch up, not planning schedules in advance to account for regular assessment deadlines. Structure is key: first thing is to learn to file things neatly—the boys tend to just chuck everything into their bags or into a general float file, when they should use a proper filing system; second thing is to keep a regular diary (they have one, they just don’t know how to use it sometimes); third thing is to rigorously plan the use of their limited spare time—especially to settle homework frequently and on time, early if possible.
Disclaimers are in order, gotta come clean with you: 1) I helped design ACS(I)'s IP, drafted the first white paper on it for MOE; 2) I taught there for 12 years as a senior-level educator; 3) I am now an education consultant in the private sector. Based on this, I can safely say that ACS(I) has in principle a good, effective curriculum; however, the implementation by individual personnel may be better or worse than required, and the students do enter with a very wide range of capability and capacity. Current principal is an active thinker with good implementation capability, but it’s not always about the principal alone. -
Thank you autolycus and esteema for the valuable reply. Appreciate it. Thanks…

Hi,
For Y3 IP Subject classes, there’s an option with Comp Studies.
Any idea if this is a popular option since it cannot be used to replace a science subject when computing for IP aggregate points?
And based on past stats if any, how many classes will be offering Comp Studies? -

Normally not more than one class. It can be used as the sixth subject; it is technically considered a mathematics subject, which is why it can't fill the sciences slot.

Yes. As per Autolycus indicated :-

1. There’s only one Comp Studies class offered
2. It is not replaceable with a Sc subject
3. Popularity depends on perception - some prefer 3 Sc combo; some prefer to dip into computer studies for interests & do 2 Sciences for options. -
Thanks Autolycus and Estéema!
Is it true that many Asean scholars take this course?
Is it difficult course to score?
Also, any idea how many IP classes for Chem/Phy/Hist and Chem/Phy/Geog combi?
