I guess I was more interested if there was different participation (can qualify and chose to accept it) across the schools. Question relates to a) ensure program keeps being offered and b) possibly improve enjoyment of the program (some of these classes more interesting if more voices?). If they are all sufficiently filled / oversubscribed each year, that would be good enough. I'm not saying 2x students in BSP at school X is better (or worse) than others. Just wondering if this is a program that attracts/has enough students everywhere it is offered.
You are correct on RV. I was thinking of NYGH, DHS, and SNGS due to Bilingualism DSA option, and I added SCGS as it also tracks with CHS/SNGS to EJC (where the program continues).

1. How much more time commitment is needed for IP vs O level track?
2. Do the IP students need to stay back after sch often?
3. Is the HCL lesson additional class or part of the normal class schedule?
4. Is it possible to switch to O level track later? How does the sch view such switchers?
5. What is the sch hours?

A) school hours
Hi all

Assembly start 7.30 am.
After that, students go back to their respective classes, lessons start around 7.45 am.
Recess time around 9.30 am or 10 am.
B) need to stay back after school ?
Yes
But every student's commitment is different. Hence, per week, how many times a student need to stay back after school, varies for individual.
Example
Below are school activities, that can require students to stay back, after school.
I) those taking 3rd foreign language at Bishan MOELC, ie. (Japanese/ French / German / Spanish), need to attend once a week lesson ( duration 3.5 hours ).
MOELC (Bishan) lessons, start around 3.30 pm in the afternoon, 3.5 hours duration.
After that, go home do homework assignment, on 3rd foreign language.
2) students taking AEP / MEP may need to stay back in the afternoon, to consult their Art / Music Teachers. But the MEP lessons are taught, during school hours normal curriculum time.
AEP : Art Elective programme
MEP : Music Elective programme
For MEP (Music Elective pgm) -
IP :
got 1 designated class, for MEP students.
OP :
the same thing apply, also got 1 designated class, for MEP students.
3) CCA
A) those students who DSA in by Sports,
Cca commitment is 3x per week, sometimes even more, closer towards Inter Secondary schools competition time.
B) for Non DSA students, Cca required usually 2x per week.
But this year,
covid breakout :
Cca stand down, during circuit breaker.
4) Re-medial lessons
This year, MOE announced cancelled All Mid-year May month (SA1) exam.
After Term 3 (August) Assessments over, some students have been identified to attend re-medial lessons, because they failed or shaky border line pass, in their Term 3 Assessments.
Remedial, is once a week, duration 2 hours or longer, if students feel the critical need & a sense of urgency to clarify their doubts on concept understanding matter with their subject Teachers.
5) Talent Development programme
- for Science
- for Humanities
- etc.
need to stay back too.
6) nearer / closer towards exam time,
sometimes students on their own initiative, form small group of (2 to 3 ) students seek personal consultation after school, consult their academic subject Teachers on those topics they don't quite grasp nor fully understand. Students will come prepared, with a list of questions to ask, so that don't waste time. -
As for Higher Chinese (HCL),
the question #5, you have raised -
1) HCL lessons are automatically built into our regular curriculum time table, that is, during school hours from (7.30 am to 2 pm), so NO need
to stay back after school.
2) Total number of HCL lessons conducted, per week in Lower Sec = 3
3) HCL is compulsory for All IP students.
For \"O level \" track students -
If they received from Moe the PSLE qualifying eligibility letter to study HCL from Sec 1, then proceed to do so.
Thus,
for all future, potential PSLE students targeting St Nick (SAP) Secondary school,
especially under the new 2021 onwards \"AL\" PSLE new points scoring system,
do ensure that you master your primary school (P4 to P6) HCL content well,
because
if you fall under the O-level track and want to do HCL (starting from Sec 1), you will need this important eligibility letter, from MOE.
Otherwise,
if an OP student did not receive MOE letter, only continue with Sec 1 bu-hwa (Standard Chinese).
When reach end of Sec 1, school will re-assess.
If the Sec 1 student at year-end does very well in bu-hwa,
plus
if overall, her percentage including all other Secondary 1 subjects are also good,
she can approach Chinese HOD, inquire if she can be allowed to study HCL, starting Sec 2.
Our school doesn't look at only one single bu-hwa subject only, but overall, all her other Secondary 1 subjects, also need to take into account.
4) for Year 1 students taking HCL :
No need to buy any bu-hwa textbook whatsoever, because school won't be touching nor covering bu-hwa content.
Just buy gao-hwa textbooks (Sec 1 A and Sec 1B), will do.
5) for HCL EYA (End-of-year Assessment) exam :
both Lower Secondary (IP and OP) track students , will be taking the same identical, common paper.
This whole week,
just started yesterday Monday (28 September) until this Friday (2 October),
is our Term 4 EYA (End-of-year Assessment) examination period.
6) come Upper Secondary Year 3 -
a) All \"O-level track\" Sec 3 Higher Chinese students,
will sit for their GCE \"O-level\" bu-hwa exam.
After results gotten released later subsequently,
even if OP students scored bu-hwa (B4 or C5 or C6), in the immediate following year Sec 4, they still can proceed to take O-level (gao-hwa).
There is [B] NO [/b] discrimination whatsoever inside St Nick,
to bar any OP student from taking O-level (gao-hwa),
just because these students scored a less-than-satisfactory-bu-hwa grade (B4, C5 or C6).
b) All \"IP track\" Year 3 students,
NO need to take any O-level (bu-hwa) exam at all.
But,
amongst the IP students, for some personal reasons or other, if there exists some students who still prefer to take the O-level (bu-hwa) exam, perhaps, can approach our school's Chinese HOD personally, see if she can allow you to take, or not.
All Year 4 IP students
will sit for National O-level (gao-hwa) exam.

Hi! SCGS IP Exams for Sec 2 are from 28 Sep to 7 Oct.
As to whether they take the same papers as SNGS IP, I am not sure. For Lang Arts, SCGS Sec 2 read Romeo and Juliet, not sure about SNGS. SCGS’ lower sec Sci is split into three separate papers - Physics, Chem and Bio - not sure if it is the same as SNGS. -

3. Higher Chinese is part of regular school timetable.
4. Not sure.
5. Starts at 730am, ends at different time for different days and different classes. I dont think there is any class that has recess at around 930am or 10am. Recess for secondary section is usually later.

Any parents with DD that had DSA into St Nicks via bilingualism domain can share their DD experience? In particular, what are the activities/projects/subjects that your DD must go through towards the DSA commitment? Is the Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP) like NYGH where the student needs to apply (year 3) and admission is based on merit? Any comment on the difference between the bilingualism programme for St Nicks vs NYGH? Just want some sensing before deciding on the commitment.
Can anyone explain what is this BSP? My daughter has been offered but she is not very keen as she is not too strong in her Chinese. Must a child be very good in Chinese to take this ? What are the additional required for taking up the BSP? -
