Just to share, my dd's Chinese teacher told me that if the child fails her HCL in her PSLE, she will not have a chance to take HCL in her secondary school, but if a child did not take higher chinese but get good grades for her PSLE, she still will get a chance to offer higher

Chinese in secondary school. Is this true?

      nmhmum:
I am still confused. Does it mean that even you fail higher Chinese but you are in the top 10% in the PSLE cohort, you can still take higher Chinese or you will have to take an entrance test?
If u are in a sec sch (IP) where HCL is mandatory….
whether u take or dont take HCL in PSLE or
whether u pass or fail HCL, u are STILL offered HCL in that sec sch….

      Under Moe eligibility for HMTL
      Pupils who are :
      - ranked among the top 10% of the PSLE OR
      - in the top 11% - 30% who meet the language criteria (i.e. an A* grade in the MTL OR at least a Merit in the HMTL)

will be offered HMTL ( HCL) at secondary schools.....

so Yes to the question, if u are Top 10% in the PSLE cohort, u will be offered HCL, no entrance test .....

When P6 pupils receive their PSLE results slips, eligibility for HMTL (HCL) will be printed clearly in the form....

If your child gets into an IP school, she is likely to be in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort. 250 & above is already in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort.

No such thing as entrance test. Solely base on PSLE results. My boy did not take any entrance test even though he did not take HCL.

Nan Hua conduct entrance test for sec 1 student to decide whether they able to take HCL or not.

Is not likely in the top 10%, it's Certainly in the top 10% since i mentioned sec schs where HCL is mandatory.....(via S1 postings)

i am juz trying to explain the different scenarios ....where pupils applied to diff schs.....
Even with the agg T-scores of 23X- 24X (successful via DSA sports/PA), these pupils are STILL offered HCL.....

              Need advice.

My boy ca2 got around 70 for both chinese and hcl.
I approached a tuition centreamd they adviced my to sign up for normal chinese class instead of higher chinese class as the focus for these two classes are different. Now I am confused. Higher chinese class in school don’t cover teaching for normal chinese paper? Will the kid cope with different syllabus should I sign him for normal chinese but let him retain hcl class in school?

I also just realized that! In my elder DD's school, the HCL class was only taught HCL syllabus, however the normal Chinese text and vocabulary are all insider; but for my DS's school, I just realized the text for normal chinese and HCL are different.

                  Ruohoo,

I cannot comprehend how hcl works.
The centre commented that because of the impact of tscore for normal chinese, we should sign up for nc if his nc paper needs help, despite that he is studying hcl in school. She said even the answerig technique and exam technique for hcl and nc classes are different.

Will the kids get confuse attending normal chinese tuition outside but hcl in school? Figured out son’s score for compre in both nc and hcl is the same! While I am ok he got that for hcl, I feel that for nc wise, it is too low.

I think I better change to nc class. If he doesn’t improve,he will need drop hcl next year anyway.

The test components for hcl n normal chinese are different for both paper 1 n 2. Hcl has only one cloze with helping words on top, one editing n 2 or 3 open ended comprehensions whereas normal chinese has more components - off hand I can only rem... 语文应用, 完成对话, mcq compre n open ended compre. Should have cloze with helping words too. U can take a look at yr son hcl n normal chinese sa1 papers.

Paper 1for hcl has no picture compo.
I think tuition normal chinese n continue hcl in school may be a wise decision if u think the child needs help in normal chinese.
